Doing a FAQ and getting junk mail

I'm relatively new to the world of 'official' FAQ maintaining. However,
since my FAQ got passed to news.answers and archived at rtfm.mit.edu,
I've noticed an increase in junk mail received.

I classed it merely as a result of increased commercialization of the net,
until yesterday, when I received a junk chain letter emailed as a reply
to my last FAQ posting in news.answers et al.

Has anyone else received a similar posting?
Is this one of the hazards of maintaining a FAQ?
Would it be worth giving up maintaining a FAQ to avoid junk mail of
this nature?

postmaster@oldcolo.com claimed this was a 'free speech' issue. I view it
as an 'mindless unwanted automatic/no-thought posts should be stopped'
issue.
