LaTeX to ASCII?

Much has been said about keeping the master form of an (a?) FAQ in
LaTeX, then using latex2html to generate an html version. However,
I and several others are stumped as to how to generate nice ASCII
out of LaTeX for the "standard" Usenet distribution. With a lot of
fiddling around, everything but the line breaks comes out okay.

In Norm Walsh's book "Making TeX Work," on p. 239, there is a
description of latex2hy. It appears to be a fairly intelligent latex
to ASCII converter. However, neither CTAN or archie have heard of it.

Any ideas?
