Well, I get about one a day anyway. Half of them seem to be from
people who don't know the difference between ftp and telnet. The
other half are from people trawling for guest accounts.

I've only had a couple of attempts to crack. One was doomed to
failure because he tried to crack root, which of course isn't allowed
to log in directly at all.
