The slashes in the archive-name *are* directory separators. In your
example, "faq/part1" and "faq/part2", both part1 and part2 are in the
directory "faq" on the archive server.
...

Often, problems arise with some client programs/users. For example, if I do:

get a/b

this really means

get a/b a/b

The FTP server is happy to retreive a/b. And, if I have a directory
"a" lying around, it will work fine. However, I usually don't have
such a directory and the client program supplies a helpful message
like:

Can't get file

Which really means:

I can get the file alright, but you're too stupid to give me a
a valid place to put it. So I will give you a silly message,
instead.

Isn't software wonderful?

Craig
