Secondly I'd ask everyone not to make assumptions about why an individual
writes or maintains a FAQ. I for one do make money off of mine. I
certainly couldn't support myself off of what my FAQ brings in (though
if I were to stop being a full-time graduate student, I could probably
increase my income from that source by an order of magnitude.)
There are also other benefits to me. I most definitely do not
provide my FAQ list for the sort of altruistic reasons some posters
seem to be assuming. Some FAQ maintainers do have more altruistic
motives than me. Just please don't assume that of all of us.
