But many of us *have* consented to this kind of publication, by using
a copyright that permits free distribution as long as the copyright notice
is intact. I would only have a complaint if someone attempts to remove
my name from my work, otherwise it's fair game.

I will note that there are CD-ROM publishers who make a point to get
explicit permissions for every file that they produce; the SIMTEL
disks (see http://www.coast.net/) have explicit OK's from all authors
on the disk, for instance.

Is it really that different to charge for a CD-ROM than to charge by the
hour for connect time to Usenet?

I believe that you can make a distinction between a CD-ROM as a
distribution medium (all articles from time 't' to time 't+1' pressed
onto a CD-ROM with headers intact for redistribution) and as a
publication medium (selected articles arranged outside of normal news
hierarchies and in no shape for reposting).
