Format for ftp pointers to *directories*???

Is there some way to distinguish between directory and file
references?

For that matter, is there a way to mark references to binaries, so
that some hypertext viewer doesn't try to link in a MS-DOS .exe
file as another document? (Or are the viewers smart enough to not
do that?)
