That doesn't seem to be the only problem. I frequently get double
messages, even if I haven't sent anything to the list in months. I've
just been ignoring the duplicates, but thought I'd mention it now lest
the problem be misdiagnosed.

This is only true for some lists.

If people set things up in a way that makes sense for them, I
personally wouldn't presume to try to get around those personal
preferences. But, hey, that's just me (a user-support type guy
who believes that the user is at least *sometimes* right :).
