* Serious work on weapons to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) goes back to the 1960s, to the beginning of the missile race between the US and the Soviets. The missile defense effort since then has been characterized by many failures and dead ends, but the concept remains alive and both work and controversy continue. This document provides a survey of past and present missile defense efforts.
