The Current Numbers

Since the airlift was discontinuedeptember, Sarajevo has been receiving onlyhird of its daily food needs by convoy, accordingNHCR spokesperson. UNHCR is attempting to deliverons of relief supplies per day, but has been falling short- Press reports indicated that as of last weekend food stocks were sufficient for four days.

Problems Elsewhere?
The situation in the other former Yugoslav republics differs from Bosnia in that most displaced people are being accommodated by host families (see table). In most cases, hosts have access to food and are subsidized by the respective governments. During the winter, however, the displaced people and hosts will require assistance as food supplies continue to dwindle.
We currently lack details on specific amounts of food aid delivered to the other former republics. Nevertheless, anecdotal evidence indicates that the other five republics are receiving less food aid per capita than Bosnia and Hercegovina.

The most serious problems could be in Croatia, which according to UNHCR estimates will require0 metric tons of food per month to support displaced people during the winter months. UNHCR reports that the current distribution system is working well. Nevertheless, problems will likely develop as it attempts to deliver monthly food parcels to the0 refugee families in private homes.
