Returns are almost complete for the gubernatorial races in southern Brazil, but are stillfor other contests.

In the key northeastern state of Pernambuco, conserva-

tive Cleopbas is leading pro-Communist Arraes but voting trends Indicate that either candidate could winmall margin. In tbe event of athe victor wouldnot be known for months.

In the Senate elections, the winners off theeats at stake now are known. Or these,re centrists or conservatives, two aretwo are Communist fellow-travelers, and two are leftist ultranatlonallets. Othersbe readily classified, including, for example,industrialist Ermlrlo de Moraes, who helped finance the pro-Communist gubernatorial candidate In Pernambuco.
