Mr.

Minority Staff Director

Select Cornnittee on Intelligence

United States Senate

.

Dear John:

This letter is in response to your request of that we examine aome testimony given to the Senate Select Conm.ittee on Secret Military Assistance to Iran and the Nicaraguan Opposition and, if possible, ortion of it for public release.

The Office of the General Counsel tOGC) has carefully reviewed the original and redacted versions of the testimony given by Lieutenant General Robert L. Schweitzer on7 and concluded that no Agency equities are at stake in this material. After consulting with several CIA officers who are experienced with and knowledgeable about the classification issues surrounding the Iran-Contra matter, OGC reported that the redaction of an individual's name and identifying biographical data from this testimony probably was not made by CIA and that your declassification request should be addressed to another agency. We surmise that the appropriate agency in thiss either the Department of Defense or the National Security Council.

Please call me if you have reason to believe that this conclusion is in error or if you have additional information that would assist usore thorough search.

An original of this letter is also being sent to Staff Director Tenet.

Sincerely,

APPROVED POPSttntey M. Irkrakowttt
