for Agriculture in Communist Countries as of7

may be interested in the attachedmemorandum which reviews tbe currentfor agriculture in the Communist countries. As of August agricultural prospects were relatively good in all tho Communist countries except North Vietnam. Crop production for the Communist countriesroup will probably be above average but less than last yoar.

A rocord wheat crop has already boon harvested in Eastern Europe and tho Soviet wheat harvest is likely to be above average but loss than the6 crop. Scattered drought conditions may, however, adversely affect fall-harvested crops.

Graia imports by the Communist countries from, the West are expected to lag behind those6 unless thereramatic change in the prospects for the fall harvest. Certain of the Eastern European countries may have significant quantities of grain for export from7 harvest. To date even the Chinese Communists have shown little urgency in negotiating for Free World grain.
