3. the march began at the plaza italia and continued to avehida bernardo o'kiggens (the main thoroughfare in downtown santiago( with oily minor incidents. upon reackinq the main avenue, the marchers were blocked froh proceeding to the presidential palace, as had been planned,arricade of carabhero (national

police) buses which were strung across the avenue. - the buses separated ihe marchersroup ofembers of the movement of the revolutionary lefthich had been mobilized to confront the marchers. the majority of mirwere male, many of whom wore helmets and handkerchief masks. the mir members were armed with rocks and clubs. in aodition to the mir, another small group ok pro-government counter demonstrators had assembled on the opposite side of the marchers along avenue bernardo 0'higgens.

AT THIS POINT THE CARABINEROS INTERVENED AND UTILIZED TEAR OAS TO DISSOLVE THE CONFRONTATION. THE WOMEN RETREATED AND REGROUPED SEVERAL BLOCKS

AWAY. WHERE THEY WERE INSTRUCTED BY MARCH LEADERS TO PROCEED TO

CONFRONTATION ENSUED BETWEEN THE MARCHERS AND PRO-GOVERNMENT ,

FORCES. THE CARABINEROS ONCE AGAIN USED TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE THE CROWD.- THIS EFFECTIVELY BROKE UP THE WOMEN'S MARCH. REMENANTS OF

THE DEMONSTRATION ATTEMPTED TO REACH THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE BY

OTHER ROUTES, BUT! WERE TURNED BACK BY CARABINEROS AT THE' PLAZA IN FRONT

OF THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE. OTHER MARCHERS RETURNED TO THE STARTING

POINT OF THE DEMONSTRATION, WHERE THEY DISPERSED.
