2. Distortion*. In his public comments. Congressman Torricelli also made statements that were inaccurateistortion of the facts. Ha repeated these distortions and inaccuracies to buttress his more lnflanmatory claims that the CIA is out of control, that fTIAriminal element, and that our credible knowledge of the reported role of Alpirei in the Bamaca amrder was known two years earlier.

Torricelli asserts that both Devine and Baxaca were murdered under thc direction of Colonel Alpirez.our information points clearlyirect role for Alpirei in the Bamaca death, his involvement in the Devine incident is less clear. Ha later claimed, 'What they didn't do was dispute any facts (as he presentedobody's disputed any facts. This has been known for three years. These people were murdered. They were murderedan whoontractual relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency, and these faailies have gone years, and now months,ariety of people knowing the truth who fail to speak it. They can call ne anything they want; they can say anything theyaven't seen anybody convinceor even attempt to convince anybody else, that those facta aren't accurate.* This claim is inaccurate, and at sharp variance with the comment he made to the CIA briefers on the evening ofS, when re remarked that it looked like the CIA had acted appropriately.
