Two Chilean bishops have privately informed Supreme Court Presidont Eyzagulrre that church leaders are skeptical of his recently publiahed findings on Inspection visits to detention centers for political prlaoners. The prelates, who claim that the Catholic Church haa learned of new human rights violations,to be exploring ways to step up pressure on the government to Improve procedures dealing with the treatment of detainees.

Zn talks with the high court official, whoandate from President Pinochet to investigate human rights conditions, the bishope said that the churoh has documented extensive evidence of torture by intelligence services at tha notorious Villa Crlmaldl interrogation center. They dlaputed the justice's public statement that he had uncovered no aigna of mistreatment. While Eyxaguirre admitted to them bbTATbJbbbbVthat he hadpast human rights abuse sTnomade it cleer that he preferred to withhold such information rather than go on the public record with horror stories that might jeopardize his efforts to clean up the system andfuture excesses.

The church would like to get the mattor before *he publia in hopea of compelling the junta to aot more forcefully in enacting reforms.
