Grain production data are from official Soviet handbooks. Examination of other Soviet dataartial reconstructionrain balance relating domestic production, net imports, and major components of consumption. Although the USSR reports grain production, it does not release information on the main uses of grain, the amounts lost in transportation and storage, or the size of stocks. Sufficient data exist to make reliable estimates of Soviet use of grain for seed, food, industrial products, and net imports.
