Historical Background and Specialization:

The Institute of Economics and Organization of Industrial Production is one of two Soviet academic institutes engaged in contemporary mathematical-economic work (the other is the Central Economic-Mathematics Institute in Moscow, directed by Nikolay Fedorenko). The institute, headed by Abel Aganbegyan, employseconomists, mathematicians, geographers and computer specialists. It focuses its activity on forecasting economicas well as on long-term national economic and development planning on the basis ofmodels. Attention is also paid to tho moreproblems of Siberian industrial development. The institute's researchers have published articles dealinguch topics as the long-rangeof the US economy, exploitation of Siberian natural resources, methodologies for the study of rural social problems, optimum transport services, economic modeling of long-term regional construction programs, and consideration of human interests in designing regional production complexes.

The institute publishes two professional, Russian-language journals: Hewn of tho Siberian Department of tha USSR Aoadamy ofSocial Saienoaa Sariea and Eoonomioa and Organimation of Induatrial Traduction. The foimeronthly series on the social sciences, including economic topics, and the latter provides coverage ot eastern regional problems, technical economic-mathematical studies, and articles on the integration oftechniques into the sphere of economics.
