The Computer Center, foundedas part of the Institute of Mathematics in Novosibirskhen it became an independent facility. The center employseople in two sections. One section provides computing facilities for the Siberian Department of the AcademySciences and for industry in Novosibirsk! the other has five departments concerned with programing methodology and the development of large duta bases for such applications as oceanographic and atmospheric modeling* the five departments are titledMedia, Informatics, Mathematical Physics, Mathematical Problems of Geology and Geophysics, and Physics of the Atmosphere and Occanr..

Guriy Marchuk, director of the center and chairman of tho Siberian Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences, has been particularlyin developing long-range numerical weather forecasts. The center is now one of the main facilities for atmospheric research in the USSRrovides regular three-month weatherprimarily to industrial users. In recent years it has boon participating in several US-USSR cooperative programs in such areas os computer software, ocean studies, and earthquake prediction. Since the, the center'shave been workingajor software program known as the BETAexperimentalwriting program designed to develop afor the machine translation of one computer language to another. In the past two years Karchi'k has also beenoncerted effort to have the Computer Center selected aa the principal site for the development and engineering of the USSR's new microprocessor technology.
