authorities appear ready to crack down on supporters of Megawati Sukarnoputri, the embattled leader of the opposition Indonesia Democracy Party (PDI) and the daughter of former President Sukarno. Her loyalists are defying pressure to abandon PDI headquarters in Jakarta and areonthlong rally protesting her ousterovernment-sponsored rump party congress.

The head of the armed forces has branded the protesters subversives, and continuation of the rally has been banned.

Jakarta may lake advantage of extra security forces, brought in for the recently completed meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum, to seize PDI headquarters, end the rally, and install the regime-supported party leaders.
