Tension Rising

A faction of the Indonesia Democratic Partyne of Iwo legally sanctioned opposition parties, meets today with government backing to try to oust party leader Megawati Sukarnoputri. Authorities are concerned that the PDI, under her leadership, could challenge the government party, according to press reports.

Megawati has refused to recognize the party "congress" and has sackedf theembers of the party's leadership council for supporting the gathering, and has publicly threatened to hold large demonstrations.

As next year's legislative election nears, the government is likely to use intimidation and coercion in an attempt to neutralize opponents, as it has in the past.

Opposition activists are defying tbe government by forming an independent election watchdog group to monitor the authorities, and lastrominent activistew party despite Jakarta's insistence that all political organizations operate within the three approved parties.!-
