POLAND: Disgruntlement In the Military

Military officials are concerned over the political attitudeB of new conscripts and the increased discontent among recruits and activated reservists whose terms of service were extended under martial law. Militaryare giving the recruits more intensive political indoctrination and tightening discipline.

>ome soldiers have usf

hunger and work strikes, threats of desertion and self-inmoted injuries bo protest restrictive regulations.

Comment: The protests evidently are localized and uncoordinated. The regime is moot concerned about the assimilation of new draftees, but its attempts to use indoctrination and discipline to alter their attiti could further alienate the recruita.
