Polish authorities in Warsaw yesterday moved to prevent the nearly daily reconstructionarge floral cross in memory of cardinal Wyszynski. Church and municipal authorities announced on Tuesday they willonument to Wyszynski in the capital. Church officials recently suggestedflBssmmmmammmmmmmW that the struggle over the unsanctioned but immensely ipular cross has put the Church in an awkward position.
Comment: By removing the most visible symbol of resistance to martial law, the regime has eliminated the main focal point for demonstrations in Warsaw. At the same time, however, it has eliminated an important safety valve for popular frustrations and thus increased the danger of more clashes between demonstrators and police.
