PLANS FOR.

Aune Soviet newspaper article on the double tracking of the Pechora railroadp vhlch presents the over-all plan for rail construction in the northwest part of. Thisconfirms and clarifies6 press reports and fragmentary information gleaned from reports of PWs released as oarlyhree major railroad construction efforts are planned. Their statue and future prospects are as follows:

QAA eson: (Total lengthilometers;. Construction on part of thie line ln the Rudnichnyy area was reported under way At that time, it was rumorod that the line would eventually run from Rudnichnyy to Inconclusive reports of construction continued throaebout the Fifth Five Tsar Plan.

The Sixth Five Tear Plan directivas originally called forof railroad from Mlkun to Koslan.3/ Additional directives have since provided for extension of this line northwestward to Mezen, on the Whits Sea and southeastward to Syktyvkar.4/ Tho whole sectoryktyvkar, ilometers long, is to be completed during the Sixth Five Tear Plan.

Tbo new mapine projected from Rudnichnyy through Syktyvkar and Mikun to Eoslan. hort sector from Syktyvkar to Mikun is to be double tracked.

Of the three major lines shown on tho map, the Rudnichnyy -Mezen lino will probably bo completed first. Open souroos indicate that the sector fron Syktyvkar to Mezan ls planned for completion in the Sixth Five Year Plan and that construction and survey work isunder way.5/ The connecting link from Syktyvkar to Rudnichnyy, onlyilometers (the shortest of tbs Pechora Railroad -North Uralsill also probably be complstsd. This line will allow developmentajor new Soviet port at Meson withrail access to ths Industrial regions of the North Urals and North Volga.

Solikamsk -Ukhta: (Total lengthilometers) PW reports ox December itfM indicate construction was under wayrack northward from Solikamsk. The roadbed was completedointilometers north of Solikamsk and broad gauge ties and rails were being laid.7/ Rumors indicated that construction was planned northwardoint on ths Pechora Railroad but no northern terminal could be determined. The new map reveals that this line will run to Ukhta. Ths line may be farther along than firm evidence Indicates, Completion in tho Sixth Five Tsar Plan is possible and may be concurrent with development of tho coking coals of the Pechora Basin. The lino will permit shipment of coking coals to tbe northern Urals which ln turn will decrease their dependence on long hanls from the Kuznetsk Basin. This line also suggests incressing development of the timber, petroleum, and ore resources of tho Ukhta rsgion.

rea of Salekhard: (Total lengthilometers} me new map snows this lino, about which there was little earlier information, running northward along tbs eastern slopes of the Urals to thsorkuta line. Tho route is as yet undetermined beyond Kyakslmvol* and ls being surveyed at Construction will presumably start during the Sixth Five Tearwill not be completed until the Seventh Five Year Plan.9/

In addition to ths major construction efforts noted, theune Gudok map indicates that tbo Pechora Railroad is completed as far as KhaTPmer-Yu and is projected at least as far as Kara. This short northern extension will connect ths Pochors Railroad with theSea Route.
