Add to the very long list one more xc90 t6 owner with an automatic transmission failure. transmission began slipping while driving. repair estimate was $5800. this is the gm-sourced transmission issue that volvo appears to be ignoring. rest assured i will be participating in any class action suits that i can find until volvo issues a recall or monetary compensation.

Transmission failed with no warning. fluid is in great shape, bad transmission.
02/24/2011125000
In the winter of 2011 while driving my car in heavy rush hour traffic in the chicago area the transmission failed suddenly and lost all power which was very dangerous and concerning. i was barley able to get to the side of the road without power and without endangering the other vehicles around me. the repairs required that my transmission be rebuilt, drive train gears replaced, and my radiator replaced which took four weeks and cost $7,000. the transmission failed because coolant from the radiator leaked into the transmission fluid. my vehicle was maintained per the manufactures requirement including a transmission fluid change less than a year earlier. it is obvious from a simple google search that this is a common problem due to defective parts and manufacturing. even more obvious because volvo will only warranty a replacement transmission if the radiator and other transmission parts are replaced. i also had to replace both rear wheel bearings earlier (about $400 each) only to find out that this also is a common problem suspected to be due to over tightening of straps during shipment. contacted volvo on 10/31/11 and they refused any responsibility for the repairs even though it is well document that there are manufacturing defects with several vehicles and this is not an isolated incident. i was told since it is not a recall they will not address it.

I purchased this vehicle thinking it would be a life long vehicle considering i had already purchased a reliable volvo car in the past, the urgent service transmission appeared and i took it to a local transmission shop (being that there is no local dealership) as soon as the message appeared the transmission started to skip constantly causing a hazard, and then confirmed that the transmission needs to be replaced. i have done extensive research on the internet and i came to find that many of your xc90 transmissions fail and i would like to know how volvo north america stands behind their vehicles in these situations. i would like to continue being a volvo owner but being that i will be forced to spend thousands on a defect from volvo it will make me think twice. i hope somebody can help me with this

My recently bought 2004 volvo xc90 t6 transmission failed while i was driving on a major highway during rush hour. it took the entire length of the light to cross the intersection and several near-misses by other cars. volvo refuses any responsiblity for the faulty transmission and after further research, i found that the transmission was replaced at 50,093 miles in 2008 while under warrenty by a previous owner.

A rubbing noise began in late september. i had an inspection and diagnostic at the dealership on september 23rd. they told me the front bearings and the lower engine mount pad should be replaced. the next day, while i was driving, the transmission seized. the car was towed and the dealership said they had to replace the transmission and entire coolant system. their diagnostic specialist was unable to detect such a catastrophic failure the day before it happened. who knows what would have happened if i was on the highway. volvo acknowledged the problem but only paid for half of the parts and labor. i still had to come out of pocket $3000+.

The transmission on my 2004 volvo xc90 went out while i was driving with my children in the car. this is a well known defect in this car yet volvo has refused to recall these vehicles and repair them. they have quoted us $7700 to repair and replace transmission and other parts damaged by the failed transmission. does someone have to be killed before something is done? these cars need to be recalled and volvo needs to take responsibility for putting in defective transmissions. a simple web search will reveal thousands of posts from owners with the exact same issue with these faulty transmissions.

I have a 2004 volvo xc90 with 78,000 miles on it and the transmission needs to be replaced. this is rediculous for such a nice car. i don't have $5,000 to replace a transmission. volvo needs to step up to the plate.

I own a 2004 volvo xc90 tc. the mileage on the vehicle is 54,000 approximately. as of 7/26 the transmission has failed, the cost to repair is 5,200 usd. there is a known problem with this year, make, and model of transmissions. volvo will not cover the cost of repairs nor have they issued a recall for this widely known problem.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 volvo xc90. the contact stated they had the transmission replaced on the vehicle 1/27/2007, because the seals failed in the drive train. the contact stated the vehicle stop running again and when they took it back to the dealer, they were told the transmission failed again. the contact stated the transmission was first replaced under warranty, but this failure the manufacturer stated was user related and not a manufacturer defect. the contact feels it is a manufacturer defect because the time frame of both failures is the same. the current mileage on the vehicle was 80,000.rl

I have a 2004 volvo xc90.at approximately 52k miles, the xc90 1st generation transmission went bad and had to be replaced.carlsen volvo (palo alto, ca) agreed to cover the cost of the transmission replacement. i was very pleased with the service and went on my way. in december 2010 at ~107,000k miles, the transmission started to hesitate & function erratically while driving..within a few days, the car was parked at my home, and was unable to engage in forward or reverse. i towed the car in; it was diagnosed w/ internal transmission problem. the service rep said that she would talk to the factory rep regarding compensation. the dealer rep called volvo n.a. rep, wyatt, who offered to pay for the parts (~$3,500) but i would have to pay for the labor(~$1,500). my husband countered that we would like the whole thing paid for since it was well-known factory defect.when wyatt heard of our counter offer, he not only denied this, but simply stated that the deal was off the table, period.the next day, i reconsidered and asked the service rep to call wyatt again with our acceptance of the initial deal.wyatt refused to put the deal back on the table and said we should pay for the repairs ourselves.i then called volvo customer care who documented the complete story, contacted wyatt via email to again.however, wyatt refused. apparently, because i have chosen in the past to have a personal mechanic service my car, change the oil and tires, etc., i am considered to be a disloyal vovolvo customer and this was a consideration in wyatt's decision not to pay for my transmission, even though it is a defective part. at this point, i had to have my car back, and told carlsen to replace the transmission. carlsen offered a 10% discount off the total price.a very kind gesture, however, i had to pay $4,600 out of pocket for another new transmission for this car. it is well documented that the 1st and 2nd generation transmissions for this model have been defective. i am disgusted.

Purchased an '04 volvo xc90 t6 on may 1st from a private seller. did research on the vehicle through msn reliability, volvo, etc. only issue highlighted was engine concerns, not transmission. it wasn't until the transmission went out on june 6th that i found numerous consumer complaints about the transmission going out at around 60k miles. mine went out at approx. 57k miles. i've contacted volvo and asked about recalls, etc. and was told i should've driven my car, or had it towed 40+ miles to the dealership to have it diagnosed to then have it repaired at the dealership so that i might get a reimbursed. about two weeks prior to the transmission service urgent message on the dash i received a coolant low stop engine. i've taken my volvo to a certified volvo repair service where the cost is going to be $5,335. the transmission went out after getting off the interstate and coming to a stop at a red light. when i tried to accelerate the car just wound.

 1. i was driving my vehicle when the transmission did not shift from 2nd gear up on the highway. the check engine light came on, coolant low and urgent service of transmission. 2. the transmission issue was constant. 3. we took our vehicle to the volvo dealership garage. it was determined that we needed a transmission replacement as well as coolant and other engine parts reaplaced. we were told that the faulty transmission damaged these other parts. we spoke to volvo vustomer serbice and they originally acknowledged a problem with the t6 transmissions and said that volvo would pay for the parts but not labor. we found out the labor would be $2000 or more. we called volvo back and spoke to a debbie that threatened us if we pushed for volvo to pay for labor, she might take back the original offer of paying for parts and told us she might have been willing to pay for labor if we had used a volvo dealership for all of the inspection or other service saying money in and money out of volvo.

At 65,000 the transmission on my volvo xc90 began slipping and causing stuttering after doing research online found that there is an abundance of people with the same problem. this defect is known to volvo and they still over charge to replace the transmission.

2004 volvo xc90, lost power during normal city driving. the transmission will not engage the car will not move forward. the transmission engages in other gears. after about 1 hr, the service transmission light came on. the vehicle only has 57,000 miles on it . the car had to be towed in for service. judging from the number of complaints on the interenet, this appears to be a common problem with this model volvo. *cn

Purchased a 2004 volvo t6 xc90 used with 98,000 miles. at 104000 the trasnmission failed. they need $6500 to repair it. if it had gone at 99,999 they would pay for the repair as it is a known issue and are paying for 100% if under 100,000. http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f18a651/470 for addtional testimony. thank you

In august of 2009 i began noticing that my volvo xc90 t6 was slow to switch gears or would chug before switching. it would not happen all of the time and when i mentioned it to my husband he said he had not noticed it. i figured it was no big deal or that it was related to a cold engine. during the middle of october 2009, i was coming home from work and merging onto a two lane bridge when my volvo refused to switch gears and would not go over 20 miles per hour. the transmission light went on. thankfully no other cars were around and my lack of speed did not cause an accident. after about 10 minutes i was able to speed up and made it back home. the car is in need of a new transmission. it has sat in my driveway for 5 months because i can not afford it. i've gotten online only to find out that i am now a member of a rapidly growing club of frustrated volvo owners. it frustrates me that this is a common problem with this year/make of volvo's. my car has 40,000 miles on it. the transmission problem in these cars needs to be formally addressed. it is a huge safety hazard when a car all of a sudden jerks around and won't accelerate to safely merge into fast moving traffic.
03/06/2010890001

Failure of the volvo-modified gm 4t65ev/gt transmission in 2003-2005 volvo xc90 t6 suv. known to volvo worldwide (and well documented in many internet chat forums) is a design flaw in the volvo modification of the valve body in the gm 4t65ev/gt transmission causing sudden and often catastrophic failure of the transmission. the transmission may go into limp home mode leaving only 3rd gear available, or may seize completely. many owners have reported sudden inability to accelerate from a stop creating traffic collision hazard. many owners report pressing accelerator with no forward motion, only increasing engine rpm, then sudden engagement of transmission causing lurching and potential loss of control. i personally own a 2004 volvo xc90 t6 suv with this transmission. the vehicle now has over 122,500 miles. it had its first transmission replacement at 72k miles at a cost of over $4700 usd to me. now, 50k later at 122k, the transmission has failed again. volvo cars of north america has denied requests for reimbursement of my initial transmission replacement. they offered 50% on parts and labor when the next transmission is needed. this occurred last week; my dealership asked volvo cars of north america to reconsider paying the full amount and they did. i want the first replacement transmission cost reimbursed to me and every other owner that has had to pay for an engineering problem that volvo has admitted to. i also seek a definitive repair so i may utilize this vehicle for what it was designed for; towing, light off-roading, carrying my 6 daughters and wife safely. *tr

Transmission failure twice and fuel pump replaced and still leaking in our volvo xc90 2004 t6 truck. volvo replaced the transmission twice, but we still had repair costs both times. fuel pump replaced and still leaking causing large amounts of gas fumes in vehicle. taking into volvo to fix fuel pump again today that is covered under the recall but just got it back from 2nd transmission repair where i had to pay for the internal engine leaks that could not be detected that in turn contaminated the 2nd transmission. i do not believe i should have paid $1600 in repairs when it has been serviced and cannot detect these internal oil leaks from the engine. this make and model year has been costly and dangerous. truck has stopped in the middle of left turn, almost resulting in head on collision. this truck seems to fall under lemon law. we have had problems with this truck since 2007.it has had 2 transmission replacements and now 2 fuel pumps, both volvo pumps. i should incur zero costs other than oil changes and general maintenance. these are major equipment failures in this volvo xc90 t6 2004 and the entire vehicle should be recalled. i will be submitting my repair costs to volvo north america. thank you for your review of this in advance. *tr

On the way bringing our daughter home from hospital, third gear went out of the transmission. after saving enough money to replace the transmission, not five thousand miles later the reverse goes out of the transmission that we replaced, leaving my six month old daughter and i stranded. the vehicle is now sitting at the transmission shop, and has been for seven months, waiting to get fixed. however, i am now a single mother trying to go to school and live off of financial aid, so what i am saying; there is obviously something wrong with these transmissions. please investigate further. *tr

I own a 2004 volvo xc90 suv. in september 2009 , during an out of town trip, the transmission emergency indicator light came on reading urgent transmission service required. the volvo was taken to a volvo dealer in ma. and the software was reprogrammed and the vehicle checked. the light went out and i drove home to in. on jan. 11, 2010, the transmission light came on again and my volvo was taken to the dealer checked and software reprogrammed. in addition, the volvo was slow to excellerate and a noise was evident in the rear end of the vehicle, on jan. 13, 2010, the transmission light came on a third time and the volvo is now parked at the dealer awaiting a new transmission. i thought a transmission is suppossed to last for ten years. is this not true? they will give me a new transmission with only a one year guarantee. is this fair? was there a defect in this particular make / model / year of volvo? *cn

With each service at point west volvo now park place volvo since purchasing the car, dallas tx, i reported a problem with my 2004 xc90 t6 that my engine surges on takeoff. with each service, they could not duplicate the problem and did not list this on the invoice. well, since they did not find a problem, i did not question why it was not listed. two days ago the 'transmission service urgent light came on, so i called the dealer to see if the car is safe to drive in for service. assured that it may just be a commuter problem, i deliver the car. i am now at 72000 miles and did not purchase extended warranty. the dealer has completed a software download ($600.00) and thinks this may fix the problem. if not, i will need a new transmission to the tune of $6,000.00. i have not missed a service, even scheduled service early because of the continued problem with the surges. why did the dealer not address this problem, when it appears to be a know problem with my make and model? when i went to pick up the car today, my service rep. went to talk with the service manage. they kept the car overnight but i am concerned that this was just a stall. what can be done? this is a know problem and ford (volvo) is doing nothing! *tr

I have a 2004 volvo xc90 t6 awd suv that i purchased from a volvo dealer. while on a cross country trip the transmission seized and had to be replace. the vehicle was still under warranty (lucky), but the mechanic told me that this model and year had a engineering flaw and he had seen a number of these with this same problem. the flaw, the turbo engine puts too much torque on the 4 speed gm tranny in the car. i asked if volvo had a recall on this issue and he said no. this first tranny went out at 60,000. at 66, 000 miles the second tranny went out. when i asked why this one went out, he explained that they do not know b/c when it is under warranty, volvo tells the dealerships to just replace it and then send it to them and they will try and diagnosis the problem. i have been told that since gm does not make the transmission any longer they have to put a rebuilt into it. i have done some research on this issue and there seems to be 100's of xc 90 owners with the same problem. i have contacted volvo customer service and they have been nice but not very willing to address this issue and i don't have very much confidence in this recent tranny. i was lucky when the first one went out, b/c i was not drive at 70 mph when it seized, i was just getting back on the hwy. the second one went out also at a slow speed. i searched through your site and did not find any mention of this issue so i thought i would post with you and see what happened. if you need further details please let me know. thanks *tr

At approximately 62,500 miles, the transmission of my 2004 volvo xc90 failed. after researching, i found this to be a common problem for this particular model car, as well as the 2003 and part of the 2005 year. i had the transmission rebuilt by an independent transmission repair shop, they were able to provide me atra manuals, which i have copies of, that shows the particular defect with the transmission which demonstrates as the direct cause of what seems to be a common problem. that problem is that the 2nd and 4th clutches are burning and eventually spewing bits of metal shavings throughout the entire transmission, destroying it. the problem was identified in the 2005 atra manual as something to look out for and inspect, in 2006, the cause was identified as improper machining of the accumulator housing, the angle and depth have now been modified to avoid damage like my car and many others owners like me have experienced. the particular model is the gm 4t65e transmission. not only an inconvenience, but in my opinion, a severe safely hazard, prior tot he repairs, the transmission light came on and effectively made it impossible to maneuver the car forcing me to pull over and assess the situation, fortunately for me, traffic was light at the time, this may not have been the case for someone else, potentially causing an accident and even worse death or dismemberment. i believe volvo should issue a recall and reimburse owners for the expense of a new or rebuilt transmission. *tr

I have a five year old 2004 volvo xc90 t6 that has had two transmission failures. it is currently at the dealer awaiting a third transmission. the first transmission failure was in august 2007, the second was in december 2008. i was told by the dealer that the first transmission failed due to excess metal and that the metal somehow traveled to the cooling system and then to the second transmission, which caused it to fail. this is a dangerous issue and i fear that the car is neither safe nor reliable at this point. i paid $1900 for the first transmission to be replaced. one week later, i returned to the dealer and complained that the transmission was hesitating and was not shifting smoothly. they could find nothing. i returned four additional times over the next year with the same complaints and the dealership could never find anything wrong. now i am waiting to find out if volvo will even offer to pay for this third transmission. *tr

I have had 3 complete transmission failures in a volvo xc90 t6 without warning requiring replacement of the transmission. the first two failed on the highway almost causing an accident as the transmission cut out completely. the last once occurred on a busy 2 lane highway while making a turn across traffic. the first one failed at 28,000 miles, the second at 55,000 miles and the third at 80,000 miles. the first one was replaced under warranty without an argument, the 2nd one was replaced under warranty with an argument, and the third one volvo won't even talk about replacing for free and wants to charge over 5k, without giving any assurances another 25k won't go by and it won't fail again. they don't care that the safest car can instantly become a death trap. a transmission isn't a disposable item that should fail every 25k, they should last at least 100k and not cut out in these dangerous fashions without warning. the third one there weren't even any warning lights. the company should fix this dangerous problem at no cost to the owners with a solution that gives the transmission a life similar to other vehicles in it's class. there answer is to put another one in, knowing it will fail and maybe kill you. *tr

It appears my story has been written here by many others. i own a 2004 xc90 t6. last saturday my husband returned home in our xc90 and told me he had car trouble. the car was sluggish and the transmission service urgent light had come on. i took it to our volvo certified mechanic two days later who said he had 3 other xc90's in during the month of october for the same thing. his course of action was to flush the tranny, replace the transmission fluid (w/volvo synthetic) and update the software. i was told if that didn't remedy the situation a new transmission would be needed. after having this work done (cost $350) i drove it home. the next morning as i drove up a mild incline at about 25 mph the car seemed to be unable to shift. when it finally did all of the indicator lights for the transmission were back on. the transmission is slipping. i called the mechanic back and was told that a new volvo tranny would be needed at a cost of between $4500-$5200. unfortunately, it will be the same defective/inadequate tranny that is already used in the 03/04 xc90's. this is not my first volvo. we have bought from them before and were happy. it seems this is not just an intermittent issue, it is chronic and volvo needs to take responsibility. this problem substantially affects the use and value of this car. i can't sell it the way it is so i am essentially trapped into spending this additional $5k. these cars are expensive to begin with and you expect quality, longevity and dependability from volvo, not to be told that at 51,000 miles the transmission problem is due to normal wear and tear. *tr

Our company owns 3 - 2004 volvo xc90 vehicles. all three have required transmission replacements at low mileages (77,000, 90,000 and 106,000 miles). we believe this is an extraordinarily low mileage for a vehicle to have transmission failure when it is a $50,000 vehicle new. after doing much research, this seems to be a chronic problem with this vehicle as evidenced by the fact that they cannot get a transmission for this in the us at this time and the many consumer complaints about these vehicles. we believe this should be reviewed by the government due to the high rate of failure at mileages lower than acceptable for transmission failures. all three of our vehicles are driven for work purposes only, mostly highway miles and do not pull trailers or are abused in any other way. *tr

My 2004 volvo t6 awd transmission had been slipping slightly shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, but there was no warning or service light. i was driving up a hill in victor n.y. when the transmission totally disengaged, the engine revved up to 4,000 rpm's and i needed to swerve off onto the shoulder in order for traffic get around me. no one was hurt, i came to a stop on the shoulder, restarted the car and the transmission engaged. i pulled away slowly and the transmission was ok, but still slipped and failed to shift up occasionally. now 6 weeks later the slipping was becoming much more frequent. the transmission service urgent light came on and i took the car to the dealer today. i have not heard the outcome yet, but after reading the incidents reported here, and all the internet forums, including:http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/webx/.f0a069b/ select volvo xc90 t6 transmission, i am quite sure i know the outcome. my car had 105,000 miles on it when the problem was first noticed, but this is the second transmission, the first was replaced under warranty at about 30,000 miles. my volvo dealer did not seem at all surprised by the problem. i am quite certain they see it on a regular basis. *tr

My 2004 volvo xc90 t6 has had several ridiculous issues that i have never experienced in any of the german vehicles i have owned over the past 20 years. i have been fearful of this car of late mainly because i read several complaints about the reliability of the transmission on this vehicle. well my fears became reality on friday night while my wife and 22 month son were coming home from the market. my wife called me frantic about how the car will not go into reverse and now that i have managed to drive out of my parking spot it is not moving above 20 mph. needless to say, i was angry and very concerned for my family's safety. she was able to creep home and we called the tow truck company to take this piece of junk to mooer's volvo in richmond virginia 804 755-666. i wish to file a complaint about the reliability of this vehicle and the danger it places it's owners (mostly people who turn to volvo due to it's safety record, we sure did!) and their families. i have read hundreds of people experiencing this exact problem with this vehicle. the dealers know there are issues with these cars yet they dumb you down as if you are a unique case. monday morning i will be in my attorney's office with my facts i gathered over the weekend showing this is such a ridiculously common problem that if volvo hasn't done right by consumers they better get ready for major lawsuits. to start, they need to buy these cars back from consumers for what ever they owe on these cars and issue a statement apologizing for putting out such a terribly dangerous product for families. *tr

Transmission failure on our 2004 volvo xc-90 t6 awd at approximately 56,000k miles. fortunately it was a warranty repair; however my research on automotive discussion boards like edumds indicates a very large pattern of failure of the transmission on this model. *tr

My 2004 volvo xc90 t6 has produced a transmission service urgent message but the dealer could not find a problem in the vehicle memory. it intermittently would rev over 3k rpm with no acceleration and would violently jerk into gear from a stop after revving for a few seconds without acceleration. just before the dealer finally agreed to replace the transmission (71k miles) it was jerking repeatedly into gear at only mild acceleration. *tr

The gears started slipping . i brought into volvo dealership and they say i need a new transmission. after reading up on internet this is a problem alot of people are having. transmissions should not fail at 60, 000 miles. *tr

Vehicle unable to shift properly, computer reading transmission urgent service locks in third gear in limp mode. vehicle caused very near fatal accident when stopped on a hill and after initially moving out into traffic, seized to operate. towed to dealer, dealer first flushed out transmission at $240.00, then without road testing, suggested we try again. vehicle failed once again while in the dealership parking lot and was told the transmission needed to be replaced, $6,000 later. *tr

While driving on the interstate highway, the 'transmission service urgent' message appeared on the display of my 2004 volvo xc90. i was fortunately able to drive the car home (<1 mile) and get it to a volvo service center (20 miles) the following morning. the service center indicated that 3rd gear of our automatic transmission was 'gone' and that the transmission needed to be replaced. the transmission was replaced with a re-manufactured transmission. i found this issue surprising since, although this vehicle has significant mileage for its age, >90% of that mileage can be attributed to highway driving (commute >80 miles per day). i also have reviewed many reports online from other volvo xc90 vehicle owners describing the same problem at far lower mileage. *tr

My car is not driving well when i drive it hesitates which is very dangerous when i driving especially on the highway i just recently noticed that the transmission light came on, and when i brought it to be service the said it is going to be $2,500 i just had it serviced it has 94,000 miles on it but when i checked online i see that others with less miles have the same complaint with less miles. we pay alot for great quality and safety for our families. so there should be a recall cause i'm not the only one. *tr

I was driving back from the store and the transmission started to slip. i turned around to move the car from my parking garage to the street and the transmission warning light came on as my car stopped accelerating as i parked. the car had been serviced by the dealer 2 days prior including a service and transmission fluid flush. the vehicle had 45,000 miles on it. the dealer replaced the transmission (under our extended warranty) and said the coolant had leaked into the transmission. *tr

I drive a 2004 volvo xc90 t6 awd. suv. after 78,000 miles my transmission has completely failed without warning. i was on the road and everything was normal . after accelerating at a busy traffic light first and second gear in my transmission failed. this occurred in busy traffic. the transmission engaged suddenly and the car jerked forward without warning or control. the entire transmission has to be rebuilt. i searched on line to see if there were any discussions about this and there are. please check edmunds.com volvo forum. there are over 35 similar complaints some while people were driving at high speeds. apparently volvo used a gm transmission designed for a much smaller car. there should be a recall for volvo to change or repair this very expensive issue. *tr

Three and a half weeks ago my 2004 t6 xc90 jerked for the first time. i was on leaving the parking lot at work and the rear end made a loud bumping sound and the car jerked forward. it felt like another car had bumped into me, but i was the only car on the road. it didn't happen again for another week or so. thursday, april 24th, i'm driving to work and the car isn't picking up speed when i push the gas. the rpms go up but it doesn't accelerate. friday, april 25th i took it to the dealer and there was no problem. the car drove perfectly, even after i picked it up. saturday, april 26th at 9pm, i'm driving alone on the interstate and the transmission service urgent light comes on, the car loses power the rpms are running up with no acceleration. fortunately i was in the right lane so i got off at the next exit and was able to make it home, but it continued to have intermittent power loss the whole time. i'm in nighttime traffic putting on the hazard lights trying to get home. i have to wait till monday to go back to the dealer, the transmission service light has been on since saturday. the dealership gets the vehicle monday, and keeps it until friday saying the cem module had to be replaced. i wasn't confident of the fix so the dealership service rep kept the car to drive over the weekend. i picked it up monday, may 5th. the invoice says 'code tcm 002b incorrect gear ratio' was the error message found. the software for the tcm was upgraded, but apparently didn't fix the problem because the cem was replaced. this vehicle had 53,897 miles on it when his occurred. i have not owned the car 4 years yet and wish i had gotten an extended warranty because this recent work was not covered and cost $1297. from what i've learned on the internet in the past few weeks this t6 xc90 has transmission failure as its theme. i find it incredulous that volvo may be putting me and other members of the public at risk for a problem that could result in an accident. *tr

2004 xc90t6 has failed transmission at 82,500 miles. i first noticed problem when first starting from stop. the vehicle would not accelerate and then it felt like i had been rear ended. problem persisted and now problem occurs at first acceleration and at further attempts to increase speed the transmission falls out of gear and catch. the failure of the transmission poses a significant safety risk and appears to be a wide spread problem particularly with the 2004 xc90 t6. the last time it failed i was stuck in the middle of an intersection and was almost struck broad side by an approaching vehicle. the volvo dealership advises me that the original transmission is not compatible with the t6 engine. reported failures have occurred as early as 1,500 miles and volvo's corrective measures of replacing the transmissions with remanufactured transmissions does not appear to be correcting the problem as there are numerous reports of repeat failures. volvo has agreed to replace the transmissions with a remanufactured transmission but has refused to pay for labor. the dealer has agreed to pay for half of the labor. i have requested the dealer to retain the transmission and the associated parts. i have also asked volvo if they have notified nhtsa of the widespread failures and they have refused to provide me with this information. the drain lines from the sunroof had to be replaced. updated 05/15/08

My car makes a throbbing humming noise causing the gas peddle to vibrate while accelerating at a slow speed. the car was brought back to the dealership for review and they said it was normal. i brought it to another dealership for a second opinion. the shop foreman reviewed it and concluded that it was not a normal feature of the car. they had a field technician from the manufacture to look at the car and they do not know what's causing the noise. coincidently, they had another car owned by volvo just like mind that made the same noise and vibration. they changed several components in the drive train for that vehicle but the problem was still there. the dealership have no other speculations or suggestions of what to do next. i feel unsafe with my car since volvo doesn't even know the source of the problem. i contacted customer care center at the very beginning and they did not help much. i contacted the president & ceo of volvo north america a couple of months ago. i have not heard from them. *ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 volvo xc90. the contact stated while driving 45 mph the transmission failed. he noticed numerous complaints regarding the transmission for this year make and model, so the contact drove the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact that the transmission coolant line needs to be replaced. the contact asked the service manager if the manufacturer was willing to pay for half of the cost of the repairs and the manufacturer declined. the contact feels a recall should be issue because of the numerous complaints regarding this year make and model for the transmission problem. the failure mileage was 102,000.

2004 volvo xc90. consumer states problem with transmission *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle was jumping into gear or lunging when he applied the accelerator pedal. the consumer stated the original transmission was replaced at 53,000 miles in 2008. the dealer performed a diagnostic check and determined that the front axle had lost a plug and that the transmission had become contaminated and that was the cause of the jumping in the transmission. the repair of the front axle and transmission flush was approved at volvo's cost. however, diagnostics also revealed the passenger side air bag was defective and needed to be replaced. *jb

I am experiencing continuing safety problems with my volvo xc90. this vehicles all wheel drive (awd) system is malfunctioning without warning and at random times. this results in unpredictable and erratic vehicle handling which creates serious safety issues to the vehicles driver and occupants. this has been occurring for at least one year and was confirmed and documented by a volvo dealer during the summer of 2005. i must point out this safety problem involves an active system that cannot be controlled, adjusted or disabled by the vehicles driver. this safety problem caused an accident during the winter of 2005. at that time, the all wheel drive system failed suddenly and without warning on a snow covered road. this caused sudden and uncontrolled front wheel spin which led to a loss of vehicle control and with the vehicle sliding off a road. a tow truck was required to move the vehicle back on the road. the volvo dealer that confirmed the problem has made several failed attempts to repair it. they have documented communication problems within the vehicles high speed network and reloaded vehicle software. they have also replaced: 1) the vehicles front wheel sensors, 2) the mfi module used for vehicle diagnostics, 3) the bcm module used by the awd system, and 4) the awd aoc unit with clutch and transmission. none of this has resolved the safety problems i am experiencing from this vehicle. this volvo dealer has told me the problem cannot be repaired because: 1) the vehicles diagnostic system does not report any diagnostic codes, 2) their own technicians cannot diagnose the problem, and 3) volvo technicians cannot determine the problem. my requests to volvo cars of north america have been ignored or rejected, even by volvo consumer affairs and volvo regional managers. i am left to driving a vehicle with obvious safety problems that cannot be diagnosed or repaired by anyone. *nm

Transmission replaced two times, at approx. 38,000 and at about 48,000 miles. units start slipping when shifting to second gear and leave you right where you are until they decide to rengage. ball joints and all four hubs replaced by 50,000 miles. axles (front) need replacing now at 70,000 miles. sway bar ends replaced at 55,000 miles. this is the neediest vehicle i have ever owned. front bearings on drive shaft replaced last month, worn since abut fifteen thousand miles, finally got so loud that we could shake the drive shaft and get a quarter of play at the bearing set. *tr

I have my 2004 xc90 t6. at about 34k miles a noticeable 'thrum' began somewhere in the drivetrain. original diagnosis was worn tires. after replacing tires, the noise has become worse. now at 35k miles is very loud. new diagnosis is failing wheel bearing. a bit of research indicates i am not the only xc90 owner with a wheel bearing failure. wheel bearing failures at 35k miles this should be declares a defect and recalled. please research this problem. *tr
