My airbag light has been on for approximately 8 months. i had it to the dealer and they said it was a loose connection. they re-connected and the light went off. now it has been back on for about 2 months. also i have a hard time connecting my driver seat belt, one time i had to drive without it at all since i could not get it to snap in at all. also the passenger seat belt display light flashes even when there is no one sitting in the seat. i called and apparently i am not a part of the recall for the airbag. my sister has the same car, same year and has the same issues. i find this hard to believe that this is an isolated problem.

Upon starting the vehicle, the dashboard check airbag light was constantly illuminated. took vehicle to the dealer (23jul08) where they diagnosed code b1701 and replaced the front drivers seat belt buckle assembly. at 43,340 miles (03feb09) i needed the passenger seat belt buckle assembly (b1706 code) replaced. at 57,106 miles (06nov09) i needed the drivers seat belt buckle replaced (code not documented by dealer). now (19dec12) the check airbag light is lit again (103,121) and the codes b1701 ad b1706 both show up. most likely replace both driver and passenger seat belt buckle assembly. an unbelievable number of seat belt buckle replacements in the life of this vehicle. since seat belt issues like this illuminate the check airbag indicator light, i have to believe this is a safety factor related problem. *tr

The air bag light on dashboard stayed on while driving. the front passenger seat belt light blinked on and off. the only way to make it stop was to fasten the passenger side seat belt. i took the car to dealership and was told that the ocs (occupant classification system) sensor in front passenger seat had burnt itself out. failure to replace sensor would cause airbags to fail. did some investigating and found that a recall had been issued for this sensor back in 2008. the dealership informed me that my car was not part of the recall. my vin number was not on the list. same make, same model--not part of recall???? the repair cost $1000 for a new seat. how many other owners of hyundai vehicles are not part of recalls? *tr

June 2008, seatbelt light & airbag light come on intermittently for passenger seat. code b1706, passenger buckle pretensioner. part was replaced by hyundai, under warranty. august 2012, mileage 45,000 airbag warning light on intermittently, then permanently. code b1706 passenger buckle pretensioner, again. contacted both corporate hyundai and dealer and told no warranty on this item and no known problems with it. seems that repeated failures of a component of the srs is a major safety issue. vehicle has low mileage and passenger seat is rarely used, yet buckle pretensioner has failed twice!! i have noticed repeated entries regarding this problem on the 2006 sonata. if you are experiencing this issue be sure to file a complaint here, even if you have resolved the problem. *tr

I just had to get the driver side seat belt buckle replaced because the check air bag light was on. i've seen many other reports similar to the one i'm reporting here. a year and a half ago i had to get the passenger seat belt buckle replaced for the same issue. i was told that without getting these replaced when i did the air bag would not deploy, which is a huge safety issue. searching nhtsa found quite a few similar reports, and searching the internet found a ton more. this appears to be a defect impacting the safety of at least this car's make and model as the air bags would not deploy, and potentially other makes or models (i only checked my own). i urge the nhtsa to investigate the issue due to the frequency of complaints and the impact to the passengers' safety.

Brought my vehicle to dealer due to 'air bag' warning light remaining on continuously. dealer states that it is the passenger seat belt tensioner that needs to be replaced for approximately $350.00+. they did not have the part in stock. came home and googled problem and found that this is a very common safety issue with this vehicle. i do not see any recall listed for this issue yet. it is a safety issue that is discovered quite often with this year, make, model car in that with this problem the air bags will not deploy. is there any research going on now related to this problem and will a recall be issued in the near future?

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 hyundai sonata. the contact stated that the passenger side air bag light and the seat belt light would illuminate on the instrument panel only when the passenger seat was occupied. the air bag light and seat belt would not illuminate when the seat was empty. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the air bag sensor and seat belt sensors needed to be replaced. the dealer also informed the contact that the components would possibly fail again due to a defect with the sensor. the failure mileage was 102,000 and the current mileage was 112,000.

The airbag light came on and the vehicle was brought to the dealership for service. it was reported back to me that the seat belt sensor had failed, causing the airbag light to come on (and it was not covered on my extended warranty). from researching on the internet, it appears that this is a common problem with the hyundai sonata 2006. hyundai refuses to do anything about it even though it is potentially a very dangerous malfunction.

I have a 2006 hyundai sonata that had my airbag and right seat belt light come on at the exact time. researching this online i see i am not the first person to mention this defect with the 2006 sonata and feel this problem should be addressed. this is a major issue leaving the driver with no airbags in the case of an accident. the cost to get this fixed is around $400.00 and i am told by the dealerships they know it is an issue with this model and that many customers have filed complaints regarding it. it's a defect having to do with the passenger seat/seat belt. this can result in someones death if not addressed and needs to not be ignored, but corrected before it does.

Previously reported suspension failure caused accident. air bag light did not deploy but came on and stayed on giving error code. today the auto body shop doing the repairs to my car stated that the seat belt pre-tensioner's in both driver and passenger seats are not working and both need replaced as well as the air bag sensors on the driver and passenger side.

Purchased a 2006 hyundai sonata new. after approx 30,000 miles airbag light came on. took it to spradley motors in cheyenne, wy for diagnostic. was told they couldn't find anything wrong and reset the light. within 1 year, airbag light came on again. took it to spradley again and was told it was a seatbelt pretensioner. said they would order parts and reset the light. after multiple calls parts never came in but light stayed off so no further action was taken. airbag light came on again approx 70,000 miles. received a recall notice for brake light switch. took in for recall and to have airbag light checked again. was told all would be fixed under recall. after six weeks of waiting for parts, brakelight switch replaced and shop told me that the seatbelt wasn't covered and would cost over $500 to fix. filled complaint with both spradley main office and hyundai usa. no resolution offered. reply from hyundai effectively said that since it wasn't under warrenty it wasn't their problem. have been driving without airbags for almost a year as i don't have $500 for repairs. as someone else stated if i have to wear a seatbelt by law, hyundai should have to guarantee that they work.

I have a 2006 hyundai sonata. the air bag on the dash board came on. brought the car to the dealership and they scanned it and told me that the ocs sensor went bad. this is covered by a recall. they also informed me that the righ front buckle sensor is failed. the dealership has already replaced the buckle once. they informed me that this is out of warranty and there are no recalls listed for it. i called hyundai consumer affairs to report this asking if there should be a recall on this and there is none. i had the seat buckle replaced about 1 1/2 years before.

Took to dealer to check on air bag indicator light on dash. told by dealer that sensor in passenger side seat belt needs to be replaced for $375.00. and that all airbags were inoperable until sensor is replaced. car is 8k miles past warranty. called hyudai consumer affairs hotline to file complaint but was told nothing could be done by hyudai at this time. b&*l s&%t. my car has never been in an accident & the passenger side seat has been occupied 10% of the time. after reading all of the other sonata owner complaints of this nature, a moron can disceern that this is a system design flaw & hyundai should step up & claim responsibily and make this right b-4 people die & this problem turns real ugly.

Hyundai sonata 2006 <80,000 miles, airbag light comes on due to short in passenger side seat belt. seat belt is still functionable. if the light is on the airbags are disable- safety issue. this is a safety issue that must be addressed by hyundai. call hyundai consumer relations at 1-800-633-5151 and file a formal complaint so that this can be escalated. if consumers choose not to fix the seat belt for $400 this become a safety hazard!

On my 2006 sonata the sensor in the drivers side seat belt breaks, turning on air bag notification light. i took the car into crain hyundai of north little rock and they stated this is a common issue with this model and it wasn't covered under warranty according to the mechanic at crain this will stop the seatbelt from working properly and it will turn off the air bag. this is two major safety violations. 1 seat belt not functioning properly, 2 the air bag is now turned off. this makes the car worthless as far as resale value and a major safety issue.

I own a hyundai sonata 2006, and just before it got to 80,000 miles, the air bag light suddenly went on. it has stayed on for a week as of 9/25/10. i looked it up online and it seems many people have had this same issue with the hyundai sonatas and it is very costly to fix. i think this is a safety issue that should be looked into with hyundai, if it happens repeatedly.

The airbag dash light on my 2006 hyundai sonata stays on. the dealer says it is due to a fault in the seatbelt tensioner on both driver and passenger side.

My airbag light came on. i took the car to the dealership/service garage and was told that there was a problem with a sensor in my seatbelt/airbag and it cost $400.00 to correct. i was unable to pass the va safety inspection with the light on, so i had to pay for the repair. sixteen months later, the light came on again! i returned to the service dept, they ran a diagnositc and told me that the same problem had occurred. i refused to pay for the exact same repair. this is obviously a problem with the hyaundai brand and they should fix it. i searched the interent and found that numerous other individuals are experiencing the same problem. please help! must i be expected to pay $400.00 to correct this problem every year in order to pass inspection? this is not fair and hyaundai should make this right. i'm told that my airbags won't deploy if i become involved in an accident.

I have had to replace the seat belt buckles on my 2006 hyundai sonata 3 times in 85,000 miles, twice on the passenger side and once on the driver side. the problem is the sensor that triggers the airbag light and prevents the airbag from deploying. it is an unusual defect and to have it happen 3 times would indicate to me that there is a manufacturer's defect. i am contacting you because of the safety nature of the problem. i have been told that the airbag will not deploy on the side of the defective seat belt sensor. the first occurrence of this was with less then 8,000 miles on the car. *tr

The airbag light wouldn't go out and the dealer has indicated that there was a failure in the sensor in the drivers side seat belt which will cost $400 to replace. have never had a problem like this in any other car i have every driven. due to cost have chosen to drive without a airbag on the drivers side. *tr

Airbag light / problem. took car to car pros hyundai, seattle wa on aurora. advised them my airbag light all of a sudden stays on. they advised me that it was seat belt issue and some wiring under the floor board. hyundai advised me that the air bags wouldn't work if i was in a accident. asked them if this was under warranty, they said only up to 60, 000 miles. and my car is over that. i advised why aren't all seat belt functions and airbags covered through the life of the car. doesn't make sense. its the law that i have to wear a seatbelt, well it should be a law that the seat belts are working properly and airbags for the life of vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 hyundai sonata. the contact stated that the air bag light remains illuminated on the instrument panel. the failure indicates that the air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash. two months ago, she took the vehicle to the dealer twice for repair. the first time, the dealer reset the light, and the second time they replaced the sensor in the passenger seat. the air bag light has illuminated again within the last thirty days and is still lit. the hyundai dealer stated that they could not repair the failure, but would like the contact to drive 200 miles so that an inspection could be performed. the manufacturer stated that they will send out a customer service satisfaction notice for all customers experiencing air bag failure. they further stated that they will develop a remedy because they are unsure of the cause of failure. the failure mileage was 25,000. updated 7/3/08 *cn when the brakes are applied the seat belt will release and not lock. when the accelerator is applied, the seat belt will not release.

SEAT BELTS - FRONT - WARNING LIGHT/DEVICES
09/07/2005013507/29/2005
The seat-belt warning chime on this vehicle activates the moment the driver's belt is unbuckled even if the car is at rest, the automatic transaxle is in park, and the parking brake is set. this loud, grating chime repeats every 6 secs. although i assume the system meets current nhtsa rules per se, there is a safety threat because i have seen many posts on internet forums from people wanting to know how to deactivate the system because they, like most drivers, have occasion to be in the vehicle not in traffic with the engine running. examples include drive-up bank teller and atm's, drive-thru food service lanes, and in parking lots with the vehicle idling to make cell phone sales calls. safety is threatened because if the chime is disconnected then it can't warn if the driver truly forgets once the vehicle is moved from rest or if the driver forgets the key, which would increase the risk of joy-riders stealing the vehicle. also, shade-tree mechanics could damage the seat-belt pretensioner system wiring trying to hot-wire the buckle switch. i call on the nhtsa to call on hyundai to modify the system and the promulgate new rules that would require that additional warning chimes after the first timed cycle be allowed only after there are signs that the vehicle is moving, such as speedometer input, the vehicle's being removed from park or shifted into gear, or the parking brake being released (for example, similar to the system for the warning light on the 1997 chevrolet cavalier that i drive at work). *nm
