Defect SummaryVehicle description: mini vans. the bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt is loose, the gas strut is over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles is higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Consequence SummaryPersonal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
NotesOwner notification began during august 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi is closing this investigation.

Driver side door opened while rounding a bend causing me to almost fall out of the vehicle, if it hadn't been for the seat belt i would have fallen out. after the door opened i swerved loosing control however ther wasn't an on coming vehicle at the time.from the force of the door swinging open both of the joints broke off and the service man at our local dealer informed us that he sees many of these problems on the 1994/1995 models. i had all of the recalls done to date including the rear latch, that i never had a problem with . i have also had to replace the 02 sensor. i fell this could have been far worse if there would have been an on coming car at the time, we were very lucky.

I was leaving church on 6-11-00 and had 5 other passangers in the car. the last passanger into the car was having difficulty closing the sliding door so i got out to do it. the door was indeed difficult to close and as i managed to get the door almost closed, it fell off of the tracking and landed on my feet. my feet were hurt as well as bad scraping to my arm as i tried to catch the door when it started to fall. i was in total shock at having a door fall off. we couldn't get the door back on and had to drive with the door off. i had two children and two elderly passangers in the van besides myself and my friend. i had no other way of getting the vehicle home so had to drive it this way. when we got home we managed to get the door back onto the track but could not open the door again as it was inoperable. i called chrysler and was told that there was not a recall on this but they would look into helping me get this repaired outside of the warranty as they said that they do this from time to time. when i brought the car to papa's dodge where i bought the van i was told that they called chrysler credit and were told that i would have to pay for the part and the repair at the cost of around 300.00. a service technician told my friend privately that they have had a problem with this happening with this model van. i had been told by the service manager that this problem had never occurred before. this is a safety problem. doors don't just fall off of cars! i was told that the rollers had eroded. this should be covered under unusual wear. one can't tell me that everybody who owns a dodge caravan will have their door fall off after 6 years of ownership. i don't agree that i should have to pay for this. this is not normal wear and tear, this is abnormal. my children now have to crawl through the front of the car to get to their seats. i am also in fear of the door falling off while i am driving until i can get this fixed. please help. *ak

The sliding passenger door basically fell off. the door was not abused, just normal wear. my wife went to shut the door and it fell off. (only thing keeping it off the ground was one bent hinge. i took the van to the dealer from which i purchased it. the dealer would not admit to manufacture fault. however, i was able to get them to lower the bill to fix the door from $303 to $133. i still believe that this is a safety hazard, caused by a structural design flaw in the sliding door. there are numerous complaints in the nhtsa database concerning this problem. i don't believe i should have to pay for fixing this problem. dodge, chrysler, and the local dealership should be responsible for all of the costs.
