Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. however, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.
NotesOwner notification began during january 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM - FUEL RAIL

On september 5, 2004, mr. robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.his petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle is being towed.mr. galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioner's 1996 dodge intrepid.on october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.that investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.this is still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsa's database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.

I know that this problem is under a previous recall, but i have taken this in to the dealership three times to have it fixed and it has only lasted maybe 6 months. i 'm concerned about my family's safety. i would like this brought to the manufactures attention. i had tried to trade this car in, but the dealership, which was not the manufacture was uneasy about this recall. i feel that this needs further investigation . thank you. *ak

On 15 nov 2003, my 1996 chrysler lhs, vin 2c3hc56f7th189561, started smelling of gas while i was waiting at an intersection. after driving to a nearby lot, i determined that fuel was leaking on top of the engine, around the fuel injector rails. didn't want to drive it, so i parked it and called my auto service for a tow to a las vegas precision tune autocare that i've used for vehicle maintenance. they confirmed the fuel rail assembly was leaking and needed replaced. injector base gasket, injector o-rings, plum gasket and injector rail assembly was replace for $540.72 equipment, $337.12 labor, shop supplies $34.55, and tax $43.14 for a total of $955.54. upon filing my maintenance records i found an earlier daimler chrysler safety recall to replace fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the fuel outlet rail, recall 790. i had a virginia chrylser dealer accomplish the recall corrections on 23 april 99. called the 1-800-992-1997 chrysler customer service number to determine their assistance in reimbursement for the obvious failed recall repairs. was told by the representative that since i had not taken it to a chrysler dealer there was nothing they could do. two issues: 1. the recall repairs obviously did not correct the problem, how many other lhs's could be vulnerable for an engine fire? for safety i hope someone researches this and ensures corrective measures are taken before someone gets hurt. 2. i've got the paperwork, is chrysler still not liable for the repairs of their poorly engineered fuel system, enough so that it could cause an auto fire or worst? thanks for your time, rick miller. *jb
