I'm very unhappy as a chevrolet client. my car has completely locked up and will not start due to the anti theft system. upon a diagnosis, the chevy mechanic told me it its my duty to get it towed to a shop only to have it hooked to a machine for $110 an hour only to get the car turned back on. i have seen that this is a common problem with this model of car and i'm very mad that it costs me and not chevy for this avoidable, tedious problem. i thought their cars were suppose to be reliable. i will never buy another chevy again! -very disappointed chevy owner *tr

The ignition/passlock system problem of intermittent no start that many others have with the 2003 malibu left me stalled in traffic. lucky for me there was no accident (not yet anyway). i have been dealing with this problem for a couple of years by doing the 10 minute reset as described in the owners manual. i took it to the dealer who replaced control & cable binding. replaced floor shift control. replaced shifter cable & ignition switch cable. the problem remains. i basically gave up complaining to the dealer and went back to the 10 minute reset procedure. a couple hundred dollars down the drain. my son asked why the car was never fixed. he found the technical service bulletin describing the exact problem as i and many others have with the 2003 malibu: it states that engineering would like to inspect any vehicle before the actual repair has been performed where the repair diagnosis leads to replacing the ignition lock cylinder for an intermittent or hard no start type of condition or customer complaint. (nhtsa item number 10002562) (service bulletin #022003). my son complained to the dealer and was told they fixed the stalling problem. they said i didn't mention anything about the ignition lock cylinder. my statement in the service order reads as follows: owner states can't turn ignition lock cylinder at times. from what i have learned, the ignition lock cylinder should have been replaced. the ignition/passlock system is defective and should have never been installed in the 2003 malibu. gm knew this but installed it anyways. they even have a remedy in their owners manual describing the 10 minute reset solution. gm creates the problem and then have unsuspecting customers pay $$$$$ to fix something else instead of fixing the real problem. this defect is an unsafe and an unethical scam!!!!!!!!!!

My 17 year old daughter has a 2003 chevy malibu and she was stranded the other day because her car shut off and would not start back up....my husband changed the fuel filter thinking that might be what it was with no success. i found on the internet today about the way to reset the anti theft system and it worked, but people have been saying that once this problem starts it doesn't stop happening. i feel that this is a safety issue for a young lady to be out somewhere and the car not start. i read many complaints about the same exact problem and i feel that it is a shame that cherolet won't recall the problem....if it is not recalled i will never buy another chevy!!!

The heating/cooling blower does not operate at low speed setting (1-3). works only at high (4) speed setting. at times some smoke is observed coming out of air vents. i had spoken to a mechanic during routine oil change at a dealership and he told me that this is corrosion problem causing due to condensation and eroding the contacts resulting in non operation of blower motor at low setting.

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet malibu. the contact attempted to start the ignition but the engine failed to operate with the illumination of the anti-theft security system warning indicator. the engine was restarted after ten to fifteen minutes. in addition, the same failure would occur while driving and result in the vehicle stalling. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who advised that the ignition system and computer module would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 36,000. kmj

Parked the car, came back out and it wouldn't start, though there was power from the battery and the engine acted like it was trying to turn over (indicating that it wasn't the alternator). had to have car towed. turned out that the theft system (passlock) locked me out. mechanics reset it. it happened again about 10 days later.

Car will not start fuel pump shuts down, car thinks it is being broken into. have to sit in car for 10 minutes with key in ignition to override system. has happened 4 stimes in last month. also, fuel pump shut down while driving on parkway- lucky to get to side of road without an accident. by the way, new fuel pump and module replaced at 60,000 so that is not the issue.. how many people need to get into accidents or die before the nhtsa gets involved and makes chevy do the right thing and replace this ignitiions and passlock parts that are defective!!!! oh, and they got a bail out- but the consumers dont get any and have to continute to pay them for repairs that they caused in the first place gm makes an astronomical amount of money on these repairs. i hope the nhtsa gets a share of that money because you certainly arent interested in correcting the situation. how many years and tens of thousands of complaints does it take???????
10/02/201180000
My 2003 chevy malibu would not start. i learned that the reason it would not start was due to the theft system pass lock. somehow the theft system was triggered and cut the fuel supply to the engine. i did what the manual said and waited 10 minutes with the key in the on position. the car started after that; however two weeks later, the car does the same thing. the process is repeated to reset the theft system. but now i wonder how many more times this problem will occur and why hasn't anything been done about a recall. over 30 incidents have reported online at http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/malibu/2003/ so why hasn't there be a recall for this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am sure that more people have had problems with this they just have not reported it. this problem is very inconvenient and you never know when your car is actually going to start. something needs to be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The vehicle will not turn on every few times when trying to turn it on. the theft light begins to blink. i have to turn it to the on position for 10 minutes for it to restart, then it will work.

After a year the lights on the dashboad/radio and window wouldn't come on right away. then the engine light would come on but there's was nothing wrong with it. then the service light would come on month after i had a oil change done. while i was driving, the car just slowed up and stop. told by my mechanic it was the fuel pump but while he had it for half the day; the car started right up with no problem. also sometimes there's a clicking noise like my signal is on but its not. i was told it was my alarm key. every time there is a incident computer shows it but can't explain the problem and it stop for awhile but comes back. been like this since i had it and i have taken it to the dealer they keep it over night same thing.

Passlock system is not working properly. occasionally the theft system light comes on and occasionally the fuel system gets shut off so that the vehicle doesn't start. i have seen many complaints on the internet about this problem with all gm models that have this passlock system.

I have been having repeated problems with my cars theft system defaulting and not allowing my car to start randomly on several occasions, this problem has been reoccurring for about the past 4-5 years.there were no events leading up to this failure, it just happend. it occurs almost daily and is a huge inconvenience. i have taken the vechile to several gm dealerships and have been told its the passlock, bcm, car not reading the key, and several other issues. i have been told they could not duplicate the problm as well but wanted to charge me over 900 dollars for fix something they think it could be as well. i can place the key in the on setting in the ignition for anywhere from 15-30 minutes plus sometimes and this eventually works, but it a huge inconvenience. i have been stranded several times due to this same issue as well.

Gm chevy malibu passlock system. originally i had a 1998 malibu and thought that it was unrepairable so i sold it for scraps and bought a 2003 malibu and about every month (2 times per month for the past 3 months) i go to work or store just fine and when i come out it doesn't start. i've been taken through several different scenarios by the mechanic at the chevy dealership where i purchased the 2003 malibu from, only to be told that there were several issues with it and they have fixed it costing me about $500 every time it occurs. it wasn't until it happened last month while leaving work and a co-worker called a mechanic friend of hers who informed me of the pass lock system failure and told me to wait 10 minutes then start it up. since then it's happened 2 more times, once while my daughter was driving (luckily i was with her to know how to handle it). i've called the gm to no avail; they seem to know nothing of this issue and their mechanics don't acknowledge it being a problem either so because they've replaced or fixed several issues (not the issue plaguing the vehicle) which they probably made up; i'm out of thousands of dollars! this is an issue that has apparently been going on with this model for several years and they (gm) refuses to recall the issue or make any effort to fix the problem. thank god i put away money for rainy days but i am livid thinking about how much i would have saved if it weren't for gm or chevy! the government needs to recall this piece of equipment immediately; before gm swindles anymore unsuspecting drivers out of their money! fyi check this website http://www.car-forums.com/talk/showthread.php?s=af8ae0d52c5e7e7e95d95a891b99fbcf&t=1545&page=2 or just google (or what ever search engine you use) issues with chevy malibu and see what comes up!

I have a 2003 chevy malibu with a passlock system. the theft system light comes on even while i'm driving! or the car simply won't start, even though it's in my own driveway and no one has messed with it. the only 'solution' is to wait 10 minutes (sometimes longer) until the car will start again. this is ridiculous! i've checked online and there's complaints about the passlock system everywhere. why has this not been recalled yet? i'm a single mother and i can't afford -- literally or figuratively -- to pay for unnecessary car repairs....especially when the passlock is a *known* problem and chevy refuses to do anything about it. i also can't afford another car and now i'm worried every time i shut off the car, will it let me start it back up again? help!

While driving the car on freeway it just stalled. i coasted to berm. it then restarted. i've had all kinds of electrical problems with this car, but this is a saftey problem. i've read that this engine cutting out is probably associated with the passlock system. i've had problems with that system ever since i've had the car.

The passlock anti theft system is a very dangerous system. there have been thousands of complaints about this system. thousands of angry, frustrated people that are being left with no recourse. the problem dates from the 1990s.through 2010. the problem should have been addressed before now. i just spent over $5000. for a car that cannot be moved out of my drive way i don

2003 chevy malibu, 1 out of 3 starts forced to wait 10 minutes before trying a restart, usually twice before succeeding. forces waiting in the dark or in unsafe places at night, such as finishing work. extremely unsafe for any female. $300 quote at stealership to repair. fitted 20cent resistor to feed correct resistance value to anti-theft system, which is also guaranteed to fail eventually. will have to build a circuit to bypass this also to remove the problem completely. shame on the stealerships for not correcting this problem as a recall. the potential for criminal activity personal injury/death are high and the high cost of repair is a disgusting tactic for any company to use to coerce customers to line their coffers replacing defective equipment.

Own 2003 chevy malibu that will just shut off. the anti theft system built in the vehicle will do this. have to wait 10 min before it resets itself then it will start. chevy dealership that i went to is aware of this problem in this model and offered to fix it for $400. i was told that this is fairly common. sounds like a defect to me and needs to be fixed for free by gm. bought the car brand new. this started in 2006 and has continued to do this 1 or 2 times a month since then.

Tl. contact owns a 2003 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated while trying to start the vehicle it would not start. the contact towed a local mechanic to have the ignition lock housing assembly replaced. the vehicle would not start because the computer thought the vehicle was being stolen due to the ignition switch. this is the second time the contact has had the ignition lock housing assembly replaced on this vehicle. the contact state the manufacturer should issue a recall due to the numerous complaints online. the failure mileage was 35,760. jo

For years, car stalls while driving and can not be re-started, or more frequently, just won't start. no warning except a fine, dim red anti-theft system light which is unlikely to be noticed at all, and certainly not immediately. can happen several times per day, or can go two weeks without a problem. short term remedy is reliable if inconvenient and in some situation, dangerous; with car in park, turn off all system, turn on ignition switch but do not start, do not disturb for at least en minutes. system will then be reset. there is evidence that this problem had multiple causes. got partial, temorary improvement (less frequent failure) by replacing defective ds lock switch, which is also used to program that locking system features. because the users is supposed to initiate locking system programming by holding the swtich closed, and the lock was sticking closed and opening unpredictably, it was surely creating inputs not anticipated by the system's programmers. i believe the ignition switch system, including the interface with the tranmission selector system, is still causing this problem, and frequency of occurance increases. have not found satifactory solution. can't afford the $400 dealer says it will cost for (possible) fix, ambiguous explanations make me doubt the dealer really understands the cause. no actual property damage or crash yet, but obviously risk is high when car suddenly stall in traffic.

2003 chevy malibu: the theft light comes on and the car will not start for a period of time. this happens just about every day, and we have to wait for the car to start. the car also dies on us while we are driving, putting us in a very serious and dangerous situation. without warning it just shuts off.

Passlock system is defective due to nickel plating on starter tumbler causing oxidation. dealers are able to make a killing on this defective connector because they have to troubleshoot a full fuel pump system and wiring harness before they will replace the passlock system. occurs once every few months intermittently and becomes more serious as the oxidation worsens. potentially dangerous situations occur when vehicle would stall in an unsafe location (ie: railroad tracks or highway) and vehicle will not restart. coupled with the recall these vehicles had with the accelerator sticking (which mine did on a highway) this could be a very dangerous problem. i have researched thr problem online (all you have to do is goole passlock problem and you will get thousands of results and consumer fixes complaining about how gm ignores every service request for a solution that doesn't gouge customers. there is practically an underground club designed to handle this problem.) according to the shop foreman at colonial chevrolet in norfolk, va, after his 14 years of experience with service this is a problem he is intimately acquainted with and recommends replacing the key tumbler (passlock chip integrated inside) and the connector that leads to the body control module.

The anti-theft light has been coming on and off for the last four years - and when it flashes i need to reset by turning ignition to on and wait ten min. - now the light stays on all the time and i'm concerned that at some point the car will not start and i will be stranded.

I have a 2003 malubu the anti theft comes on alot to fix this u have to have the key in the on for about 10 min, then turn the key in the off and turn the car on, and it starts, but that trick is taking longer and longer each time one day it will leave me there, i think chevy should recall this and fix it... there is no way of knowing when and why this happens. chev says they need more people to camplain about this before they wiill do anything so here it is...

Car would not start , theft lamp flashing, went online and found issues with gm theft deturent system[pass key] many others are having same issues, also some claim the car quits on them and they have to wait 10 min. to restart car.even in my owners manual it states that this system may fail.and it gives a procedure to follow.car may or may not start//recommende fix is a new ignition switch/passlock sensor at a cost of 500.00 to 800.00 dollars to the consumer i feel that gm should replace these on an as needed basis under warranty for any one who encounters this quitting//no start condition may cause accident if car just shuts down while driving????

I own a 2003 chevy malibu. in the last 6 months, the theft system light pops on and doesn't allow me to drive my car. i found out if i turn the key in the on position for 10 minutes, the light will stop flashing and will allow me to start my car. this has happened 4 times now where my car will not start and i have to do the 10 minute wait for it to restart. my car is the only means of transportation for me and my husband who is severely disabled. i have read online that this is a problem that has occured to hundreds of chevy malibu owners. i need my car to function correctly. what if i have to take my husband to the emergency room or doctor and my car stops running? i believe chevy knows about this problem as they listed the 10 minute remedy in their owners manual. i would like chevy to fix this as it appears to be a ongoing problem with the chevy malibu.

Anti-theft light continuously comes on. replaced ignition lock cylinder two months ago. now the car does not start at all and the anti-theft light is still on! this is a serious safety issue. i cannot travel with my kids, especially during the winter cold b/c i never know if i have to wait 10 minutes for the theft system to reset. i called the dealership today and they told me they need to hook it up to a $5000 computer to de-code the anti-theft errors. the gentleman said it sounds like the passlock module. with the cost of towing, the computer scan and parts/labor, i'm looking at $800. he also said there is no guarantee it couldn't happen again days or months down the road! *tr

During normal operation of my car, i will randomly have issues with the passlock theft system not allowing me to start my vehicle. i had the modules replaced at a gm dealership approximately 15 months ago. at that time, i simply parked my car for the night in my driveway. i came out the next morning to take my daughter to school and the car would not start. i had to have my car towed to the nearest chevy dealership. they called gm and it was recommended that i replace the ignition module and a sensor to the tune of over $500. i was told this would fix the issue. now, i find myself facing the same problem only 30,000 miles later. i stopped at a gas station and filled the vehicle up with gas. when i went to leave, the car would not start and the theft system light was on. being a veteran to this issue, i immediately turned the car off the waited for 10-15 minutes. this will sometimes work to allow the car to restart again. however, this time it did not. this same issue occurred and the results were the same. if you simply do a search for chevy malibu passlock, you will easily find the thousands of people affected by this problem on a daily basis. it puts everyone at an inconvenience and even some lives at risk (as it can turn the car off while it is in motion). *tr

Okay, this complaint is about chevrolet malibu. they are having a huge problem with their anti theft system. the car would run perfectly and then the next time you turn the key it wouldn't start. this has happened 3 times to us within a week. and if you google it, you'll see that there are thousands of people who are having the same problem! it's a real safety issue and has to be taken seriously and dealt with. tonight my mom who owns the car was stuck on a dark parking lot at a temperature below 0 for over an hour. she's sick now, thanks to chevy. of course the technicians won't find anything but start replacing the ignition, reprogram the anti theft system, etc. but this all doesn't help. the problem is that there are single women out there in the dark not being able to start their car. there are elderly people who are unable to make their doctor's appointments. and there are people on the highways praying the car won't shut down in front of a truck this time. it is a huge safety issue and has to be dealt with. please confront gm with this and let them fix it. we don't want to wait for an incident like a rape, robbery, or even death to start them thinking. *tr

I have a 2003 chevy malibu. the passlock anti theft system has left me stranded many times. i have recently been stuck at night in a dark parking lot waiting the ten minutes for the system to reset. this is a personalsafety issue for anyone having to sit in an unsafe location waiting for the system to work. this problem occurs often (two or three times a week). this should be recalled and fixed on gm's dollar because it is a common problem and anyone who owns a gm car is spending money out of their own pocket to try and fix the problem when it is gm that is responsible for it. *tr

For the second time in two years, as i started my car the theft system light came on and the car would not start. the dealer says that the ignition has to be replaced due to the pass key theft system not recognizing my key (the original key) and breaking the ignition. this has left me with a dead car alone as a woman at night. this is the second time this has happened and i have had to replace the ignition. *tr

The theft system (passlock) engages on my car for no reason. the first time this happened, back in 2003, shortly after purchasing my car. i was at a bank, with my young daughter, getting money out of an atm. after returning to my car, the vehicle would not start. i had to pay money for a tow, and the mechanic charged me $800 to replace the fuel pump. car did not need a fuel pump, it only needed the theft deterrent system turned off. i know this because the mechanic called to ask me how to do this. at the time, i had no idea. i now know that the $1000 i paid for tow and fuel pump were a total waste of money. since 2003, this theft system engages for no reason, 2-3 times per week. it is insane. in order to dis-engage it, i have to wait 10 minutes sitting in my car; sometimes with my young children. i have read thousands of complaints for this problem, dating back to cars made in 1996. i cannot believe gm has not been forced to issue a recall for this worthless theft system. i wonder what genius felt it necessary to force someone to sit in their car for 10 minutes, key in the ignition, to reset the theft deterrent system. i'd rather my car be stolen! while i am sitting in my car, waiting for it to start, me and my family could be kidnapped, robbed, killed. this is insane. if it cannot be made to where it does not malfunction, they should just not put in on vehicles. or, they should only make you wait a mere 1-2 minutes with the key in the ignition. 10 minutes is an insane amount of time to have to wait for this to reset. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that there was an electrical issue with her vehicle. the turn signals would operate without initialization and the power door locks were also inoperable. the check engine warning light continued to illuminate on the instrument panel; however, there were no other failures. the independent mechanic advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer could not assist with the repairs because there were no recalls available. the current and failure mileages were less than 87,000.

I had a problem with my turn signals. they would work when they wanted to. i took my car to a chevy dealer to find out what it was and how much it was going to cost to fix the problem. the service attendant was very knowledgeable about this particular problem. i was told that they had recall up to 2002 malibus for this same problem but of course mine is a2003 so i had to pay for it to be repaired. the cost was $110.00 which wasn't bad but the 2002 and 2003 parts interchange. so why wouldn't they have same recall? *tr

I went to the doctor today. my car was fine. on returning to my car, it would not start. i called aaa. they showed me the passlock anti-theft system was engaged -- with no identifiable cause. the gentleman who helped me, told me he has seen this often. i am using the original key, and i am sure the car was not tampered with. reading online, i get a sense that this will probably start happening more. although this is the first failure, i read that the car can switch off while driving. i am concerned as my 16 year old daughter also drives this car, and that she may be endangered. *tr

The anti-theft system in my 2003 chevrolet malibu is defective, apparently this is a problem for just about every owner of a chevy malibu. this needs to be recalled by gm!!!! about once or twice a week when i attempt to start my car i pray the anti-theft system does not blink, because when it blinks that means the car isn't going to start. the owner's manual states that if this occurs then turn the key to the on position and let it sit for 10 minutes and then turn the key to off and start the car as normal. well for about 1 year this worked, it was a hassle, but it worked. now after about a year of this pain in the butt routine twice a week to start my car, finally it died on me while driving and will no longer start. gm is obviously aware of this malfunction because they have given instructions on how to deal with it in the owner's manual, the problem is they haven't done anything to correct the problem, after their suggestion fails to start the car. this malfunction needs to be recalled!!!!!!! *tr

I own a 2003 chevrolet malibu, i have experienced on 3 separate occasions a no start incident, twice the car was towed to repair facilities where various components were changed after the car started right up. this most recent incident happened in my driveway at home and, i decided to thoroughly check out this problem. i have replace various components on the car and spent upwards of 250.00 in parts and even after that, once i got the car running again i had a check engine light on and a very rough idle. so, i took the car to a garage to have it scanned for fault codes. now, i have discovered a faulty ignition switch (fault code u1000) has been behind these incidents. and, in reading various internet forums/discussion boards, i am not alone!! (chevrolet is well aware of this defect !!) this is a manufacturer defect in the passive theft system on general motors cars. there should be a national investigation and subsequent recall on these vehicles to have this problem remedied. the dealers are getting 300-350.00 per repair and most times this problem re-occurs. i wanted to bring this to your attention as i am about to spend 300.00 plus at my local chevrolet service department to have my faulty ignition switch replaced. the new one must be programmed to your vehicle and only a chevrolet dealer can do this. please render any assistance you can in this matter. thank you very much. .....................................chris merckx *tr

I have a 2003 chevrolet malibu and the theft deterrent system keeps activating for no reason. the vehicle use to have a problem starting and now has started dying on me in the middle of driving. this is very dangerous and nearly caused an accident. there are many people having this same problem but chevrolet refuses to do a recall. it is going to cause someone to crash. it costs anywhere from $700.00 - $1,300.00 to do the repairs and most people can't afford it. chevrolet is aware of the problem. *tr

Without warning while on a shopping trip (we are in our late 70's), the car would not start and had to be towed. we were told that it was the anti-theft security system, and it was re-set. we were told that it may or may not happen again. well, it happened again about 6 weeks later, and we had to take a two hour bus ride just to get home. i believe that the dealers are fully aware of this problem and that a recall needs to be issued, or at the very least the cost of repair should be covered under warranty. *tr

When driving after a rain noticed there was water in right rear taillight. when trying to start the car the only way to get it started was to disconnect the negative battery terminal and reset the computer . well that was great except you might not want the car started then because everytime you step on the brake the radio shut off, gauges would peg out and not be able to be reset. then car would die in the middle of highway driving . if it takes the nhsta to have a death for someone i am not the one if it is water the car doesn't like i will send it back to detroit where they can put it in it's final resting place, lake michigan. let our voices be heard because these small inconveniences to them are major expenses to us all . and they wonder why the car industry is struggling own up to the problem general motors. *nm

The theft system on my chevy malibu 2003 has left me stranded on multiple occasions and cost me more than $300 in repair costs. the theft system believes my car is being stolen and shuts off the fuel to the engine. some posts say it's when you use an copied key, but i'm using the factory original. at first, this happened once every month then increased with frequency to once and week and now every two/three days. the 1st this happened, i replaced the battery. this one 1 1/2 yrs ago and now the battery needs to be replaced again. when the theft system locks me out, i have to wait 10 minutes for the light to turn off and try to turn the key over again. with the amounts of complaints about this system, i would think gm would change systems or remove the problem. it's a disgrace that they continue to put this system in a car effectively locking out the very owner instead of doing its intended job. *tr

Passlock system activates unpredictably on a 2003 chevy malibu. the only remedy is to wait 10 minutes for it to reset and then the car will start. this caused my son to be late in getting to his job that day. car was brought to a mechanic about a year ago for this very problem, and it was temporarily fixed by reprogramming and replacing the passlock sensor. the problem was fixed until now. it is a recurring issue, and is unpredictable in its occurrence. if this were to happen in the wrong place, like a darkened parking garage, someone could be mugged or attacked, or it happened in the winter, they could freeze or suffer hypothermia waiting 10 minutes for the car to start. *tr

I have a 2003 malibu sedan, and the alarm/horn has a defect. last year we had a high power wind storm and my alarm blew for about 45 minutes (2 horns). they finally died down by themselves. my car was not hit by anything except for the high winds. i had to take fuse #43 out to make the horn stop blowing every time i started my car. my car need to pass inspection, but the dealership want to charge me $95.00 an hour, to do an exploratory deal on the car, to locate the problem. another car repair company told me the cost would be $900.00, but could not justify, what they were going to do. they stated it could be the turn signal or it could be the fuse under my air bag on the steering wheel. no one can actually explain to me what's wrong, but they want to charge the heck out of me. i do not have that type of money for exploratory examinations on my car. i am quite sure the manufacturer know what the problem is with this malibu, and can fix it without a problem. i can not afford this, i was not told the car had two recalls on it when i brought the car. i feel this is very wrong, i would have never purchase the car, if i knew of recall problems. now i am stuck in the middle without a horn/alarm system. since the dealership wanted to go into my steering wheel to check the fuse for $95.00 an hour, my air bag light comes on. *tr

Passlock anti-theft system engaged with no identifiable cause. using original key and no tampering occurred prior to problem. theft system light went on randomly 3 weeks ago, but was on only for a few minutes and never on again prior to this no-start. able to re-set the system, according to the manual, by waiting 10 minutes for the computer to re-set, but this is not acceptable when parked in certain areas (malls during the evening, etc). happens frequently enough that it gets to be very inconvenient, and in need of repair. repair can only be done at a gm dealer - which is very profitable for the dealer. *tr

Car would not start so had it towed to the shop they said computer said nothing was wrong and it started for them. they said maybe a weak fuel pump. drove it for a week and same thing happened. had it towed to the shop again and they replaced the fuel pump. drove it for 2 days and same thing. now they said it was the antitheft the whole time. out of pocket total expense was $1300.00. there should be recalls on this stupid thing i went to start my car and it would not turn over so i had to have it towed to the dealership and they told me it would be $650 to fix the ignition switch. in the mean time the car is now running because the dealership told me they reset the computer. i told them i would take my chances with it and drove off after paying the $85 diagnostic charge. well 2 weeks later it does not start again. i call aaa and the tow comes out and the driver tells me it's the anti-theft device, wait 10 minutes and the car will start. low in behold it worked. so why didn't the dealership tell me this is the problem. funny they told me the reset could last 3 weeks, a year, or forever... but they still wanted to milk me for $650. so i do a google on this and find i am not the only one with the problem. what the hell is wrong with gm if they know this problem exist and don't fix the problem with a recall or a fix! i will never buy a gm car again!!!

My daughter drove my car to work. it would not start after a trip to mall. she was left stranded due to a chevrolet malibu defective anti-theft system. my car had to be towed in a strange city, and it is still there. the major consequence of this breakdown is that a 19 year old girl was left vulnerable in a mall parking lot. is it a safety hazard that could affect her? i think so. i am feeling vulnerable because my vehicle is no longer 'safe' to drive. has this issue been investigated by the nhtsa? what was the outcome? why does gm feel this is not an issue? a pattern of breakdown has been established, and a solution, whether monetary or in repair, should be offered. will it take someone being injured from a second- hand incident as a result of 'equipment failure' to make gm notice? there was no prior warning with this 'shutdown' of the car. as a mother, i cannot let my children take this car on the highway. in good faith i purchased this car, expecting a reliable mode of transportation. this was supposed to be a kid-car for college this year. how can we send our child off and always wonder if a call will come in from her that she is stranded on a deserted road that she has to travel to get to school?aaa should be furious about the magnitude of calls for design failure on this vehicle. there is a moral issue here, and i believe that gm is not interested in the 'human' factor of car sales. the right thing to do would be to figure out the problem, address it and fix it like the good old days of customer service used to be and move on. i would be willing to pay for the repair in order to have a reliable car again. i am now worrying that my 2001 malibu with another daughter out of state will have the same problems. a car that could not start on a whim does not offer peace of mind to me. do the executives at gm drive chevrolet malibus? would they let their children drive a car like mine? ps. why don't you list 'website' under the referral sources? *tr

My car stalled on my daughter and i, recently took my car to the dealer because my theft system light came on every once and a while had to pay $115.00 just to put on the machine and they told me that my ignition switch have to be replaced at a tune of $515.00 plus tax, well my car stopped on my daughter and i had to push it on the side of the road. had the battery replaced and still would not start. i'm tired they're should be a recall on this model(2003 malibu). *tr

Got in my car, put my key in the ignition and turned it to the start position. the vehicle would not start. the anti-theft light came on. i tried the procedure from the manual to correct the problem, and it did not work. it's a 2003 chevy malibu. *jb

I own a 2003 chevrolet malibu with 47000 miles every couple of days the anti theft system light comes on while im driving. i called the dealers and explained what happened, and they stated that they have to put it on the machine and it was going to cost me $105.00 just to put it on the machine. i wa s upset because i bought this car brand new, and i only have 47,000 miles on it. vehicle should not be having this problem this early. i have read complaits on this vehicle, and there should be a recall for the 2003 malibu because this should not be happening. also, sometimes the car will not start. so i read in the owners manual that you have to wait 10 minutes to try to restart the car . this did not make any sense. there should be a recall on this vehicle. *ak

Car failed to start on random occasions. became more frequent. anti-theft system was causing it not to start. would have to wait for ten minutes to start - in places like at a gas pump with others waiting to use it. theft system light would occasionally stay on even when it started. it became like playing russian roulette hoping the car would start and hoping against hope that the car would never stall in traffic and then not re-start. dealer finally had to replace the ignition switch, ignition cylinder and lock cylinder to the tune of $682.00. this was done at 71,190 miles. the ignition switch and ignition cylinder were already replaced at 46,000 miles. others i have spoken to have had the same problem with this year's model of the malibu but they never recalled it. the theft system is obviously defective.*ak

No events occurred prior to this problem. theft system activated on its own while i was driving. since having no knowledge of this problem i had work done that was unnecessary. the theft system and key cylinder were supposedely be replaced back in 10/06. i paid over $700.00. it has started to activate again as of may 1st. the orginal dealer nor manufacturer nor chevy dealer repair center i paid the $700.00 to have any helpful of underline knowledge of why it suddenly activated by itself. this was a reckeless safety hazard waiting to happen. *ak

I am the owner of a 2003 malibu. i have only had it for 6 months. the car has cut off on me 3 times with my 3 year old in the car. i have read many complaints about the same problem. i took my car to the dealership, and they said that it was the ignition switch, and it was going to cost me $400.00 to fix it. i don't have that kind of money to put into a car when there should be a recall on it. i am highly upset with gm because they won't do anything about it. also, i have heard that they won't do a recall on this problem because they don't consider it to be a safety issue. i don't see how a company can put off a recall like this when someone can get seriously hurt or even killed. i don't know what else to do, and another of course the extended warranty that i bought doesn't cover it. why do they even have an extended warranty when it doesn't cover a blasted thing.*ak

Car would not start at work wednesday morning, approximately 9:30 am. my husband came to look at it after work, approximately 5:45 pm. called chevrolet to have them tow it under warranty. tow truck showed up around 8:30 pm and towed to dominion chevrolet. dominion did not return any phone calls on the 6th until a little after 5:00 pm. they informed us that the anti-theft / ignition switch had gone bad and it would be replaced the next day. did not receive key or paperwork when picked up, just 10+ scratches all over my car. *jb

I have a 2003 chevy malibu. it won't start due to a flaw in the theft detection system. this has caused me many problems!! as i understand, this is pretty costly to repair. due to finances, i have not had the problem repaired. a mechanic gave me an alternative way to start the car which involves getting under the car and bypassing the ignition. chevy is fully aware of the problem and it should be recalled!!!!*jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle starts intermittently. it was taken to the dealer, upon inspection the ignition needed to replaced due to the anti theft device. the manufacturer has not been alerted.

I have a 2003 chevy malibu. one day after work, i could not get my car to start. it sounded like it wanted to crank, but would not. myself and a few of my coworkers continued to play with it and finally, about 10 minutes later, it started. i took it to a mechanic near my work place. i was informed by the mechanic that he had a chevy that did the same thing. he informed me that chevy is aware of the problem but does not know what causes it. he showed me that if i turn the ignition on without starting the car and all the dash lights appear, it will start. if i turn the ignition on and only the theft system light appears, it will not start and i would have to continue to play with it until all the dash lights appear. it did okay for the next couple of days but starting again and does it frequently now. a little over a week ago, i was driving home and was approaching a railroad track. as i neared that track i heard my doors unlock (which does not happen unless i manually unlock them or the ignition is turned off). i realized that my car had cut off while i was driving. thankfully, it had enough momentum to cruise across the railroad track and i was able to steer it off the main road until i could start it again. the local dealership has been notified. *nm

I have a 2003 chevy mailibu and learned that my anit-theft system will not allow me to start my car even with the key in the ignition. from what i have learn is that i have to wait 10 minutes when i am locked out from driving my car before the anti-theft system light goes out then i can start the car and drive. i researched the problem on the internet and found out that i am not the only owner of a chevy mailbu who experience this issue. i learned that other owners had to pay large amounts of money to get the ignition lock cylinder replaced, but this did not always solve the problem. the same owners had to go back to the dealership and pay even more money to get other parts replace. the replacement of all the parts did not always fix the issue completely. also, found out that gm does know about the issue but won't recall the cars because it is not consider a safety issue. but i will like to disagree with that, because it is a safety issue to me. i may have an emergency and be in a need to go to the hospital but my car may not start and i would have to call 911 for help all the time. some people can't not always afford the ambulance ride to the hospital. also, i may be traveling through some unfamiliar places and i don't think that i can sit in my car for 10 minutes while someone may want to do harm to me. this is a big safety issue to me. i also fear that one day my car may cut off on me while i am driving due to my anti-theft system and i may get into an accident. from researching the issue, i read about some owners who are parents and they fear that the car will one day not work due to the anti-theft system and they may need to get medical attention for their child, but are unable to do so due to their car not working. i know that other car owners have complaint about the same issue. i also believe that gm should be responsible for fixing this issue since it is a known issue. and are the new 2006 chevy mailbu cured of this issue? *jb

Twice now, my car has not started due to the anti-theft system. i have only had the car a year and half and it is about to do it a third time. i know this because each time the theft system light comes on and off for about three weeks before the car won't start. i cannot get the car to a dealership right away, i have to remedy the situation myself by resetting the computer which erases any code that was stored, and therefore the car cannot get fixed. *jb

The cherolet malibu we own thinks it is being stolen as the key has a computer chip in it and at times won't communicate with the computer in the car.today i had to have it towed for the third time because there is no other way to solve the problem other than getting it to the dealer.my husband and i are in poor health and need a reliable car.it has only 49000 miles on it.

Regarding my previous complaint about my 2003 chevrolet malibu that wouldn't start, doors were locking themselves, and warranty was up... i carried the car to the dealership where i purchased it new and upon checking the car and finding a code for a problem that showed up with my body control module while they had it on thier computer, the service man informed me that he was ordering a new body control module and was going to cover it for me under warranty. *ak

I drove my 2003 malibu to a friends house and parked it for about 10 minutes. could not restart the car. it would turn over and sound like it wanted to crank, but wouldn't start. had to have it towed. mechanic said that it was some sort of body computer problem and the anti theft system wasn't letting the car start. said that it had shorted out internally. the mechanic reset the thing but after cranking the car 4 times, the problem recurred. mechanic said computer would have to be replaced at a cost of about $500. at just over 41,000 miles, the warranty is no good on my car anymore. however, i told the service men at the dealership where i purchased my car months ago that the doors were locking by themselves after i'd exited the car and walked about 12 feet away. told them that it had happened several times and asked if they'd had any other similar complaints. he just looked at me, laughed and said that he'd not heard anything like that before. if a short in the body computer is causing the anti theft to activate so the car won't start, then it seems likely to me that the same short could have been causing my doors to lock. instead of checking that problem out at the dealer when i first told them about it,and my warranty was still good, the service man just told me that i was probably hitting the button on my remote keyless entry. i don't even have keyless entry on my car and i told him that. still all i got then was a laugh and a shoulder shrug. if the problem with the door locks had of been checked out, then the problem that i'm having now may have already been detected while my warranty was still good. bought this car new and feel like the dealer or the manufacturer should cover costs of parts and repair. would like to know if there are similar complaints and how they've been handled. *nm

My turn signals do not always work. apparently there is a faulty hazard light switch that shorts out and causes the turn signals to non function. i was reading on the consumer affairs website that this is a common problem with malibus. *nm
