Article Abstract:
The wingless protein (Wg) in the wingless (wg) gene expressing cells of the Drosophila wing margin inhibit the expression of wg in the adjacent proneural cells, through the mechanism of self-refinement. This leads to the formation of a boundary between the two regions. The Wg self-refinement may act through the suppression of the Notch gene required for the expression of wg along the wing margin. The cells along the wing margin are less sensitive than the cells distant from the margin since they retain a small region of wg expression even after self-refinement.

Article Abstract:
The characterization of a proliferating cellular compartment in the adult Drosophila midgut using genetic mosaic analysis is described. The ability to identify, manipulate and genetically trace cell lineages in the midgut leads to the discovery of additional genes that regulate stem and progenitor cell biology in the gastrointestinal tract.
