an ancient role for nuclear beta-catenin in the evolution of axial polarity and germ layer segregation

Article Abstract:

Research examines the evolutionary role of beta-catenin protein in forming an early signalling pattern in Nematostella vectensis. Results show that beta-catenin is stabilized along the oral-aboral axis and gets translocated into cell nuclei at the site of gastrulation for specifying entoderm formation.

Unexpected complexity of the Wnt gene family in a sea anemone

Article Abstract:

The isolation of twelve Wnt genes from the sea anemone 'Nematostella vectensis', a species representing the basal group within cnidarians, is reported. The complex inventory of Wnt family signalling factors emphasizes the important function of Wnt genes in the diversification of eumetazoan body plans.

Cephalopod Hox genes and the origin of morphological novelties

Article Abstract:

Cephalopod is described as a diverse group of highly derived molluscs including squids, octopuses and cuttlefish. The developmental expression patterns for eight out of nine Hox genes in the Hawaiian bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes are examined.
