A glut of data would be released from the international Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project in 2006 whose pilot phase involves scrutinizing roughly 1% of the human genome in unprecedented details. The first of the complexities to challenge molecular biology's paradigm of a single DNA sequence encoding a single protein was alternative splicing, discovered in viruses in 1977.

In 1999, head of the U.S. National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) at a press conference presented two sets of posters showing a healthy brain and a brain damaged by use of ecstasy drug. The scientific community called this a cavalier approach to research and accused NIDA of drug-war ethos.
