Article Abstract:
Stochastic resonance boosts the normal feeding behaviour of paddlefish, Polyodon spathula, which use passive electro-receptors to detect electrical signals from planktonic prey. It was possible to identify two bands of noise-enhanced strike probability, one above the rostrum and another larger band below the rostrum, around the mouth. This banding pattern reflects the boosting of vertical strike distances. It seems that stochastic resonance increases the sensitivity of peripheral electroreceptors, or acts within the brain, or both.
