Article Abstract:
Scientists have discovered that the multisubunit preprotein translocase protein Tom5 has key function in the importation of pre-proteins as they travel towards mitochondrial subcompartments within the cell. Tom5 receptors help preproteins through the general import pore. The Tom5 protein has a single membrane anchor and a negatively-charged cytosolic segment. The research indicates that Tom5 acts as an 'acid chain' which directs the mitochondrial targeting process.

Article Abstract:
A new threat to agriculture and forestry is being posed by the development of hybrid species of fungal pathogens that are particularly virulent. This virulence is controlled by the motochondrial genome of the hybrid species, and cooperation between the organelles containing the genetic information may have an effect on the hybrid phytopathogens' phenotype.
