Live capture of ringed seals in ice-covered waters

Article Abstract:

A new net design for the live capture of ringed seals was tested for effectivity. The design takes advantage of the seals' use of breathing holes in sea ice. The act of a seal surfacing for air trips a trigger which releases a weight that seals the bottom of the net, capturing the seal. Half of the net sets were able to trap seals but half of the traps were also opened by the seals themselves.
