Effects of vomeronasal system deafferentation on home range use in a naturalpopulaation of eastern garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis

Article Abstract:

A study measuring the effects ofsensory deprivation accomplished by vomeronasal nerve deafferentation by lesions was conducted on eastern garter snakes. Results indicate that vomeronasal nerves may not significantly affect orientation and movement in home ground. However, it may play some role in movement since those snakes withlesions had less movement. It may be that some compensation to movement by other senses may have been accomplished but not completely.

Thermal influence on defensive behaviours of the Eastern garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis

Article Abstract:

A study of the effect of body temperature on the defensive behaviours of the Eastern garter snake is presented. Snake behaviour categories observed include body flattening, biting, mouth gaping and cloacal discharging. The study shows that lower body temperatures constrain energy and influence defensive behaviour, with colder snakes more likely to display static defences, such as body flattening, and warmer animals more likely to flee from potential predators.

Male red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, determine female mating status from pheromone trails

Article Abstract:

An investigation on the ability of male garter snakes to determine the mating status of females based solely on pheromone trails is presented. The conclusion states that male garter snakes are able to minimize time spent searching for unavailable females by determining female mating status from a distance.
