The role of heterotrophic bacteria in iron-limited ocean ecosystems
Article Abstract:
Comparisons of the iron contained in heterotrophic bacteria and phytoplanktons found in the subarctic region of the Pacific Ocean revealed that the bacteria posses more iron than phytoplanktons. Moreover, heterotrophic bacteria constitute about 20-45% of the biological iron uptake in the region. The results indicate that the bacteria play a crucial role in the biogeochemical cycling of iron.

Reduced calcification of marine plankton in response to increased atmospheric CO2
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the reduced calcification in coralline macroalgae, coral reefs and planktonic organisms which has occurred as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have risen.
