The effect of mate choice on speciation in snow petrels

Article Abstract:

Research describing assortative mating in snow petrels, Pagodroma nivea, is presented. In particular the speciation process believed to be in progress between the two size morphs is investigated.

Successful homing of magnet-carrying white-chinned petrels released in the open sea

Article Abstract:

Five white chinned petrels were displaced and released in the open sea 300-360 km from home, to test whether these birds rely on geomagnetic information to home. This showed that, at least when within a few hundred kilometers of home, white-chinned petrels is able to home successfully by relying only on nongeomagnetic site-dependent information.

Age-related mate choice in the wandering albatross

Article Abstract:

Mate choice is an important subject in evolutionary biology because mate quality can influence offspring numbers of future generations. Important influences on mating choice in some species include mate age and experience. A new study investigates mating choices in the wandering albatross, Diomedea exulans, using data from a 32-year study of albatrosses on the Crozet Islands. The study finds significant correlation between the ages of males and females in both displaying and breeding pairs which appear to be the result of active selection. Further details of the study are presented.
