Seasonal variation in waterfowl nesting success and its relation to cover management in the Canadian Prairies

Article Abstract:

The role that management might play in increasing early-season nesting success information from more than 17,000 duck nests was examined during the Prairie Habitat Joint Venture (PHJV) Assessment Program of the North American waterfowl management plan in Prairie Canada. Results suggested that nesting success in planted cover declined later in the nesting season, while nesting success in most unmanaged covertypes increased.

Waterfowl use of dense nesting cover in the Canadian Parklands

Article Abstract:

Study is conducted among 3,058 dabbling ducks nests in 84 dense nesting cover fields located throughout the Canadian Parklands to examine sources of among-field variation in net density and nesting success. Nest abundance and nesting success roughly doubled in fields seeded with alfalfa.

Breeding-season survival of mallard females in the Prairie Pothole region of Canada

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates that female mallard duck survival is contingent on the prevention of wetland loss. Findings also showed that female survival is lowest during nesting. Implications for habitat improvement are discussed.
