Round objects

Article Abstract:

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has proposed a new definition for the planet, which states that the term 'planet' should be applied to an object that has a sufficiently strong gravitational field to have pulled itself into a spherical shape. The new definition would probably result in the renaming 'trans-Neptunian objects' (TNOs) and other minor planets and also those that do not have enough of a gravitational grip on themselves to be proper planets, which presently fall under the category of planets.

The gathering storm

Article Abstract:

The US agencies have prepared well in advance to respond to the hurricane season, but the political structure that mismanaged Hurricane Katrina, which struck New Orleans in 2005, has remained disturbingly intact. The science has got an opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people and researchers should do their best to ensure that the data, not the politics, determine the shape of these preparations.

Standards for papers on cloning

Article Abstract:

Deception in cloning experiments can be prevented by adopting close scrutiny of procedures and standards. Since a successful cloning experiment can be evaluated by DNA testing of tissues collected during the procedure, it is vital to determine what data can be regarded as sufficient proof of cloning and to urge scientists to ensure that critical samples are properly stored for later verification.
