Roots exert a strong influence on the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration
Article Abstract:
CO(sub2) flux from soil to the atmosphere is estimated at 50-70 petagrams of carbon a year, representing 20-38% of annual carbon inputs from terrestrial and marine sources. Respiration by roots in a mixed temperate forest, together with oxidation of rhizosphere carbon is shown to be more temperature-sensitive than the respiration of bulk soil. The Q(sub10) value is 4.6 for autotrophic root respiration together with rhizosphere decomposition, 2.5 by soil without roots and 3.5 for respiration by bulk soil.

Acclimatization of soil respiration to warming in a tall grass prairies
Article Abstract:
Research describing the ways in which soil metabolisms adapts to warming conditions in prairies characterized by tall grasses is presented. Particular attention is given to the phenomenon by which the soil acclimatizes its process of respiration.

Respiration as the main determinant of carbon balance in European forests
Article Abstract:
Boreal European ecosystems are very vulnerable to disturbances in climate. In general, ecosystem respiration determines net ecosystem carbon exchange.
