Resisting terrorism

Article Abstract:

A neuroscientist at the University of California, Los Angeles (ULCA) in 2006 declared that he would abandon his federally funded research on non-human primates after being terrorized for years by opponents of animal research. Neuroscientists who do basic research on primates are deemed attractive targets because of the relative ease of whipping up public sympathy for the animals and of portraying the research as having no practical benefit.

Island ahoy!

Article Abstract:

Detailed spectroscopic measurements of the superheavy nuclei carried out by scientists allow pinpointing, tentatively, the location of the island of stability beyond the bounds of the conventional periodic table. Nuclear energy states around the island of stability were identified by synthesizing higher energy metastable states of the nobelium-254 nucleus.
