Social dominance in adult female mountain goats

Article Abstract:

Dominant female goats are not more efficient than subordinate goats with regard to foraging and the amount of time devoted to alert behaviour. The study on adult female mountain goats, Oreamnos americanus, reveals that linearity in dominance hierarchy is only possible in case of defending of a contested resource. Horn length one year and body mass in the following year is the best morphological predictor of dominant rank while age is a weaker predictor. The ranks of individual goat differed between years and dominance rank one year is not a good predicator of rank in the coming year.
