Predation of artificial ground nests on white-tailed prairie dog colonies

Article Abstract:

The risk of nest predation of ground-nesting birds is greater on white-tailed prairie dog colonies than at off sites, according to research undertaken at major prairie dog complexes in Coyote Basin, UT and CO, Moxa Arch, WY, and Shirley Basin, WY. It appears that the relative significance of medium-sized mammalian nest predators could be similar on and off colonies. Robel cover was found to be lower on prairie dog colonies, but was not found to be a good predictor of predation differences in the multiple regression analysis.

Predation of artificial ground nests on white-tailed prairie dog colonies

Article Abstract:

Predation of ground-nesting birds on white-tailed prairie dog colonies was investigated to determine whether nest predation is higher on colonies than at nearby off sites. Artificial nests were used to simulate natural nests of ground-nesting birds at three complexes in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. It was found that predation rates were higher on colonies than at off sites. Robel cover was lower on colonies while density of active burrows was higher on colonies. It was deduced that fitness of birds nesting on white-tailed prairie dog colonies might be influenced by factors other than nest predation.
