Orientation in pied flycatchers: the relative importance of magnetic and visual information at dusk

Article Abstract:

The sun's position at dusk plays a significant role in the selection of a migratory direction in autumn-migrating, young pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypoleuca. Both visual and magnetic information appear to be important for the birds' orientation. Indeed, it seems that these birds are unable to orient when visual clues are not available. There is no significant impact of depolarized skylight on the pied flycatchers' orientation, with mean orientation remaining largely the same as in the natural clear sky condition.

Leptin and social environment influence the risk-taking and feeding behavior of Asian blue quail

Article Abstract:

The combined effects of psychological and social factors on the risk-taking and feeding behavior of Asian blue quail, Coturnix chinensis, is studied by increasing leptin levels in a focal bird and/or in its groupmates. The interaction between the leptin and social factors in animal behavior is investigated.
