Article Abstract:
A model integrating a novel combination of different features is presented to demonstrate that sympatric speciation is a likely outcome of competition for resources. Multilocus genetics described sexual reproduction in an individual-based model and the evolution of assortative mating was considering. This was often found to lead to reproductive isolation between ecologically diverging subpopulations. The theory matches well with increasing empirical evidence for the sympatric origin of several species.

Article Abstract:
A well-supported clade within the Aizoaceae (ice plants), representing 1563 species almost endemic to the Succulent Karoo, South Africa has diversified very recently and rapidly. The estimated age of diversification lies between 3.8 and 8.7 million year ago, yielding a per-lineage diversification rate of 0.77-1075 per million years.

Article Abstract:
Research describing the recent origin of endemic species diversity of the Cape flora of South Africa is presented. Molecular phylogenetics and precise dating associates the rapid speciation with extensive aridification 7-8 Myr ago.
