No hibernation for basking sharks

Article Abstract:

David Sims has combined behavioural observations and theoretical calculations to show that the basking shark has a lower threshold for gainful filter feeding, indicating that hibernation and migration are not necessary. However Sims made several assumptions in arriving at his results, that need to be verified, such as catch efficiencies of the gaping mouth, assimilation costs, metabolic efficiencies and the shape and intake of the ram filter feeding system.

Explaining the excess of rare species in natural species abundance distributions

Article Abstract:

Departures from animal species abundance models are examined. A new model is based on core species and occasional species in estuarian fish populations, explaining the negative skew that occurs in real data sets that show abundances of rare species.

Sex-biased dispersal of great white sharks

Article Abstract:

Research describing the dispersal regimes of the great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is presented. Genetic techniques show that the males are roving but the females are philopatric.
