Article Abstract:
It has been possible to develop a rapid and simple way to produce extended patterned surfaces with controlled wetting properties on the nanometre scale, without any lithographic processes. This research involved using monolayers of L-alpha-dipalmitoyl-phosphatidycholine on mica to produce a structured surface with a channel lattice showing a high wettability contrast. This lateral structure can be produced by quickly withdrawing a mica substrate at a low monolayer surface pressure and constant temperature. The transfer-induced regular structures reported in this research are very different from stripe phases of monolayers grown at the air-water interface.

Article Abstract:
A magnifying diffraction imaging procedure for X-rays has been used to assess the strain field induced in a silicon substrate by the edges of silicon oxide overlayer stripes produced by the local oxidation of silicon process. It was found that the experimental diffraction profiles registered in a strained region can be fitted with two gaussian-shaped peaks. The spectra from other parts of the sample, where the strain field vanishes, can be fitted with only a single gaussian peak. The method used in this research could be used on semiconductor devices in operating condition, as well as being applied to any crystalline sample.

Article Abstract:
Breathing and rocking motions have now been produced and observed in optical lattices, through diffraction of a probe laser aimed at the optical lattices of rubidium and caesium atoms. Similar observations of oscillations have been made in light scattered off sodium atoms. Optical lattices could have applications in lithography.
