Article Abstract:
Voltage fluctuations associated with dendrosomatic synaptic activity propagate significant distances along the axon, and modest changes in the somatic membrane potential of the presynaptic neuron modulate the amplitude and duration of axonal action potentials. Results indicate that synaptic activity in the dendrite and soma controls not only the pattern of action potentials generated, but also the amplitude of the synaptic potentials that these actions potentials initiate in local cortical circuits.

Article Abstract:
Results show that inhibition and excitation of tune-evoked responses occur in a precise and stereotyped temporal sequence in single neurons. Data indicate that excitatory and inhibitory receptive fields occupy the same areas leading to rapid quenching by inhibition of an initial barrage of excitatory input in the auditory cortex.

Article Abstract:
Research findings indicate that local cortical circuits operate with a proportionally balanced excitation and inhibition from local recurrent connections. Data show that these circuits produce self-sustaining activity, which is turned on and off by synaptic inputs.
