Male advertisement call and female preference in sympatric and allopatric midwife toads

Article Abstract:

A new study examines the link between male courtship signals and female preferences in allopatric and sympatric midwife toads. Two species, Alytes obstetricans and Alytes cisternasii, were studied. Playback tests show that, within each species, female preferences were different between allopatry and sympatry, although there was no difference in male call characteristics.
